I'm thrilled with the W, but it isn't like the team turned a huge corner. They struggled to beat a bad team at home. I was happy to see minimal turnovers though and their schedule appears to be easing up with Carolina, Denver, St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Arizona up next, there is no reason they couldn't go on a 5-game winning streak and be at 6-5. If you can get to 6-5, you have division games against Seattle, St. Louis and Arizona left, and 9 wins is going to put you in the hunt for the division title. It's a lot of pressure to put on your team, but realistically if you finish at 8-8 you could make the playoffs. And given the way San Fran has played against Philly and New Orleans this year, I don't think anybody would really be excited about playing SF in the playoffs.

I was watching the Red Zone channel (who needs NFL Sunday Ticket?) and they cut away from the Niners game when they were on the Raiders 34 yard line and the game went to commercial break. They were about to try for a field goal before someone called a timeout.
Anyway, I find out a minute or two later from the Redzone announcer that the Niners decided to punt the ball. They were on their opponents' 34 yard line! No surprise, the ball went into the end zone. Net punt of 14 yards. It was in the second quarter, they weren't nursing a lead at that point.
Nothing drives me nuts more than stupid ass punts inside around the opponents 37-38 yard line. It's really dumb when you're on the 34 yard line and that means a 51 yard field goal. At least 3/4 of NFL teams have kickers that can make that around 50% of the time and I think Nedney is probably average.
What's going to happen when you punt the damn ball when you're on the opponents 34 yard line? There's a better than 50% chance that the ball's sailing into the end zone. What are the chances that you convert a 4th and 5? Maybe slightly less than 50%? If you're likely to net just 14 yards on a punt, why does anyone not go for it in this situation? 14 yards seems like a shitty reward for not risking something that you have about a 50% chance of pulling off. It's not like you're putting your team in some shitty position by going for it. A field goal try complicates things a bit because you're putting the ball on the 41 if you miss, but when you're playing the Raiders that's preferable to punting the damn ball. Shitty coaches punt the ball from their opponents 34 yard line in the 2nd quarter (4th quarter is a different situation).Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I completely agree. If this stuff were analyzed more scientifically, teams would go for it on 4th down a helluva lot more often than they do right now. Coaches have an irrational fear of going for it and failing on 4th down because they think it will be perceived as bad coaching. It's only a few coaches like Belichik that are smart and have total job security (and somebody like Leach, who just doesn't care what people think about him) who are willing to go for it on 4th down about as often as a scientific analysis would justify it.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostWhat's going to happen when you punt the damn ball when you're on the opponents 34 yard line? Everybody was destroying Belichik last year when he went for it on 4th down against the Colts when, IIRC, the Pats were on their own 30 yard line or something.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostI completely agree. The Colts at that point in the game were driving at will and more than enough time was on the clock for Manning (the best 2 minute drill QB in NFL history) to score a TD. If Belichik punts that ball, Manning probably had a significantly better than 50% chance of winning the game. If Belichik goes for it, then with Brady at QB and possession receiver like Welker catching passes at that range, he has a better than 50% chance of making the first down. Even if he doesn't make it, Manning still has to score a TD from around the Patriots' 30. His chances improve somewhat, but time wasn't an enormous factor at that point given how Manning was playing.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Buffalo seems to have a lock on the overall #1 pick. But the Niners by losing to Carolina seem to have overall #2 pick locked down.

I think the 49ers will still win some games and finish maybe 5-11, 6-10. If that is the case they'll be looking at the bottom half of the top 10 picls.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostBuffalo seems to have a lock on the overall #1 pick. Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I don't think so. I know this sounds strange, but if Alex Smith is out for awhile, then there is no "think" about it, I know they aren't going to reach 5-11. David Carr is beyond horrible.Originally posted by DrumNFeather View PostI think the 49ers will still win some games and finish maybe 5-11, 6-10. BTW, I read some column that referred to Carr's odd helmet as a "transformers helmet." I thought that was funny. What's Tim Couch doing nowadays? Why don't they pull him out of mothballs and put three #1 QB picks on the same team.Part of it is based on academic grounds. At this point, I'm more interested in what Troy Smith can do. Yeah, it's that bad.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostI don't think so. Alex Smith out with a separated shoulder. Let the Carr era begin!Originally posted by Sizzle View PostAt this point, I'm more interested in what Troy Smith can do. Yeah, it's that bad."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

Since Buffalo is looking like Fitzpatrick may be a serviceable QB, I think SF has their choice of QBs and I think Luck is the guy.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostBuffalo seems to have a lock on the overall #1 pick. It'll be interesting to see if they roll with Fitzy. I suppose they could go for a Tackle and grab a QB in round two.Originally posted by Sizzle View PostSince Buffalo is looking like Fitzpatrick may be a serviceable QB, I think SF has their choice of QBs and I think Luck is the guy.
Where do you think SF picks next year? Top 5?"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
