are people forgetting Phil from the late 90s and early 2000s before he won a major? he was considered my many fellow golfers to be an ahole, he was surly to the press and would get annoyed at all the references to Tiger...even pouting about Tiger's "inferior" golf equipment and taking a veiled shot at Nike (Phil had zero majors at the time, Tiger had 7 or 8), his dust up with John Cook over the inferiority of his recent win at an opposite-field event, . That is why people have a hard time rooting for him...because he spent the better part of his early career coming off somewhat as a sore loser.

He has mellowed since his first Major and the events of the past year have definitely accelerated that process, as well as cast him in a very human and sympathetic light. He seems more likable and he has played the Tiger situation perfectly....even offering public support for Tiger and Elin. Very wise (strangely enough, there are now rumors of some alleged affair Phil had and possible illegitimate child in the works...who knows how these things get started, but stranger things have happened.)

But make no mistake, fellow golfers and fans were not annoyed by Phil because he was an "awe shucks" guy. He was more like Colin Montgomerie than Andy Griffith.

I was thinking about this when I read Reilly's article - Reilly says Mickelson has "stayed true to his wife". Just six months ago, the same could have been, and likely was said about Tiger.

This rumor about Phil is quite ridiculous from a sourcing standpoint. From what I can gather, someone has just been adding details to get the story picked up. When no one would run with phil having a affair with a Ohio stripper (Thanks Dayton!) they switched to Amy having an affair with Michael Jordan. I would say, don't go throwing Phil or Amy under the bus till we have a some shred of proof.

Of course not, but by the same token, we shouldn't definitively claim somebody is faithful - particularly a PGA tour veteran - and therefore morally superior to a cheater, when in reality we have no idea if it's true or not.

Tons of money, time on the road alone, lots of woman more then willing to share some time and whatever with a professional athlete. I'm more shocked about the ones that stay faithful then the ones that stray.

Sure Phil used to be an a-hole, but he has mellowed. Realize that most pro golfers come from middle class families, who have the time and means to devote so many lessons and training on the game. And yes many of those spoiled, pampered individuals turn out to be self-centered a-holes until they grow up...a growing that comes later in life for some. Phil turned 30, finally started winning and mellowed; his wife developed medical problems and he gained a different perspective; now people find him more likeable.

Pretty much. His dad built a putting green in his backyard and he'd work on his short game everyday back there. He talks about this in the foreword of his Secrets of the Short Game. I highly recommend this book.
