    Ironic Mascot Names

It's ironic to me when sports fans love teams with mascots that are endangered, but they could not care less about the real life animals who are the mascot.

For example, the Lobos. Does anybody who follows UNM care about the fate of the Mexican Wolf?

Or the Detroit Tigers -- do they not realize their mascot could be extinct in the wild within a matter of decades?

Why don't they just choose to be the Detroit Mufflers?

    Or the New Mexico Xeriscapes?

This is the worst post in the history of sports message boards, I say this knowing that Seattleute also posts here.

So owners, municipalities, and fans alike are willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars for salaries, stadiums, tickets, and paraphrenalia . . . for the Tigers, and the Lobos, or the panthers, and eagles.

GO TIGERS, fans from Missouri to Detroit to 60 other colleges and universities shout and scream. Do they care that the only tigers who may exist in a few decades are those roid-infested vermin playing tackle and fetch out on the pitch?

      It is ironic.

And kudos to the University of Missouri for this program -- evidence of a university with at least some amount of self-conciousness:

I can't tell if this was grapvine or SU. Either way imitation is the highest form of flattery and I am sure that they are honored.

It has nothing to do with extinction and everything to do with the evolution of the English language, but I find no small measure of irony in millions of socially-conservative Mormons cheering on the Cougars each Saturday.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

This is a huge airball, Levin. Just let it die a natural death. Privately and in text message, everyone is embarrassed for you right now.

Or the Utah Jazz. Does anybody know the state of the jazz scene in SLC? If the Millers had any sort of self-respect, they'd start the Larry H. Miller Institute for Jazz and the Arts at the University of Utah.

What other examples do we have of such blatant hypocrisy -- where we miss what is staring us right in the face?

Well I'm embarrassed for you for not taking this seriously.

At least your team (USuCk) chose a mascot that was already extinct. Kind of appropriate, when you think about it. Unless it's just a clever way to have a condom as your mascot.

Carbon Dinosaurs. IIRC, there weren't any students upset that dinosaurs were extinct.

If $1 from every ticket sale went to the preservation of the tiger, or whichever mascot your team may have that needs preserving, think of all the goodwill that would create. It'd almost make you forget the losses and the scandals.

I thought that name didn't refer to the extinct lizard, but to the fact that culturally Carbon County is always a few decades behind the rest of the state/country. We always referred to those quaint people from Price as dinosaurs because of how backwards they were.

Whoa...whoa...whoa. Back up the truck here. Just because you are a Carbon Dino does not mean you are from Price!
