He made $110M in 12 seasons, and now he owes more than $4M. Yikes.

I don't feel sorry for these guys that have unreal amounts of money and then lose it all . Time to start working construction, Antoine. Go hang out at the Home Depot and pick up odd jobs.

While I don't feel bad at all for him, I have to say that it was very generous of him to take care of so many leaches. If he could have had the guts to tell his entourage no, he wouldn't be having these financial problems.
It's a shame that he wasn't able to see that his friends really weren't friends at all. And I wonder if his agent ever once counseled him to invest, so he could start to prepare for the future?
It's a sad story, but he ultimately brought this on himself."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

One of the many sports related fantasies I indulge in goes something like this:
Instead of drinking and having fun and such during college I leverage my one marketable football skill (long snapping) into a position on the team as a special teams/backup tight end position. By my senior year, through hard work, I've transformed into a decent possession type receiver and an excellent special teams player (snapper, kick-off coverage guy etc.) I then pull a Schlereth and con my way into an on campus pro day where I impress some scout with my versatility. This leads to an invite to a camp and a free agent contract. I establish myself as THE special teams player for the franchise, indulge in second level team groupies and generally have a good but not overly indulgent time. Though I never make much more than the league minimum I live well below my means, maintaining a studio apartment in a less fashionable part of town though I do splurge on a new pickup. I begin buying coin op car washes around town and dabble in oil and gas properties on the side (this fantasy also requires that I get my undergrad in geology or petroleum engineering.) After five to seven years in the league I retire with my body mostly intact and an oil and car wash empire established as well as a sizable chunk of change saved up.
This is the first time I've put this down in black and white and thus the first time I realized how boring it is. Kinda like Samir in Office Space talking about putting half of his million dollars in low risk mutual funds and giving the rest to his friend Asadulah who works in securities. Shit. There's no such thing as luck, only drunken invincibility. Make it happen.

I was at a photocopy machine in teh library today, and the girl making copies next to me was chatting on the phone to her grandma about some boy she's dating who plays for the Indianapolis Colts. He's "only on the practice squad" but was still pulling down $80K a year. This smart girl was telling her mom, "if he was smart, he'd just stay on the practice squad for 5 or 6 years, live extremely frugally, and then get out with his health and a nice chunk of change. It's not like it's hard - he doesn't even have to go to the games; just practice 3 or 4 times a week.""More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

Too bad you can only be on a practice squad for 3 years max I think. If you don't make a roster by then you are done.Originally posted by Solon View PostDont' be sad. This sounds like an excellent plan.
