  • Shaggy is amazing. Over 250 posts for women's volleyball game? That's probably 10 years worth here.

      • Late in the fourth set there was a touch called that enraged the UT fans. Did they show a replay on tv? From my seat, it didn't look like it was touched.

The announcers, Karch Karaly in particular, were pretty vocal about the net judge being pretty biased against BYU, talking about turning a blind eye to UT's multiple carries at the net.

They showed a few replays but really was just impossible to tell. Hamson said after the game that it was touched and I believe her.

            Fun game.

            • Other than men's volleyball, which has about forty teams, what BYU sports have made it to a final? I guess one could count the golf championship of the 1980's. Way to see the ladies win.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

That said, Alexa is the WCC Player of the Year. She had the better year this season while Hamson found her legs and timing. I think it is a tough argument to say Jen is better this year than Alexa. Another argument is that the star of this team is the coach. Shawn sat down the starting setter in the second round of the NCAA tournament to put a more athletic outside hitter on the floor at setter. Basically, he took his #3 shooting guard and put her in at point guard for the biggest game of the year to match up better defensively and it worked. That brother sister team is amazing. I would be surprised if we don't make the sweet 16 again next year too.
I'd argue that Jen is the better all around player. There just isn't much she can't do and she's playing a more difficult position on the right side. Alexa is a far more gifted hitter though. She can cut that ball, roll it, swing line, tool the block and can even go over it from the outside position. Maybe it's just me, but I have a hard time calling anyone the best player when they're not a 6 rotation player.

By this, do you mean that she is taken out regularly at certain points in the rotation? I noticed Gray was out a few times last night (and Taxes seemed to go on a couple of runs at those times). What positions is she rotated out at, and why?

After watching a game or two of Hansom playing basketball last year, I have been pleasantly surprised with her agility for someone her size. On the basketball court she seemed a bit less mobile and agile (though still a force, obviously).

I don't know squat about volleyball, the rules, or terminology, but she doesn't serve and sits a portion of each full rotation.

I think I agree with Surfah (I don't know the v-ball lingo), but I couldn't believe some of the shots Alexa got across the net. Multiple times it looked like UT was going to stuff her, but she was able to adapt to what they were showing her and get the kill.

                      • Im worried about this final matchup. Alexa can't be the only hot player for BYU. Penn state obviously distributes the hotness more effectively over several players (#8, #3 for example, also #12 at times). BYU needs someone else to step up and look hot. We have to figure this out pretty quickly.

Or BYu has its best season ever and finishes runner up.

Yes. There are many instances where you have great front row players who just aren't very good servers, passers or defensive players. Alexa fits into this. To mitigate this you sub them out for a serving specialist or backrow specialist and then sub them back in when the rotation returns to the front row. Hamson is pretty unique in that she doesn't come off the court. Many people her size aren't that great at passing or defending but she's good enough to stay in. Plus she has a strong serve and is an offensive weapon from the backrow which offset any passing or defensive deficiencies but she's a pretty complete player.

Hamson is a really special athlete. Her size causes many to overlook her athleticism. She's no Alexa but she transitions really well and moves up and down the net.

                            • I know very little about volleyball, however I do know that my 10 year old daughter watched the entire match and kept score on a whiteboard in her lap. Pretty cool to see her get so excited about something byu related.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I was surprised that, if I recall correctly, Hamson had nearly as many digs as kills last night; given her size that's pretty remarkable. Does Hamson have any eligibility for football? She'd probably be a great TE.

And given that no matter what happens tomorrow, it will have been a great season and the playoff run has been beyond impressive, I hope (and suspect) Olmstead will have them coming out loose and just excited to be playing in a game.
