Soccer is the hardest sport to score in. Many 120 minutes no goal. Goalkeeper, offsides, chasing a ball on foot makes it hard to score. My 5th and 6th grade teacher was hs soccer coach and that’s all we played for pe fall and spring. Did grade school games too. I missed them because BYU was playing football on tv. Dedicated. Some classmates thought I went down to Provo.
kids went next door to play football and our soccer team died. Enrollment increased and we got our own football team my freshman year. I coached and p
did pa for them now. Didn’t when much when I was in High School but recent years success including state championship last year. Bowed out in semifinals this year.
School next door does co op with neighboring school but football or cross country for our fall athletes. I tried to watch World Cup on tv bu5 hard to watch. Takes lots of efforts no wonder there are 1 0 penalty kicks sometimes. BYU couldn’t quite pull it off. I enjoyed playing soccer mostly as pick up ga,es. But have a hard time watching it.Last edited by grapevine; 12-19-2021, 01:57 PM.

Absolutely, which would have changed the entire dynamic of the remainder of the game. I think we get the breakthrough goal if he makes the right call. I couldn't remember, was that foul the same girl who took out Colohan?Originally posted by BigPiney View PostThat ref kinda sucked. Should have been a second yellow on the egregious foul where she didn't go for the ball.
I thought the offside call that disallowed our goal was rough too. When it's do close it is difficult to tell I like to see them let the play go, but I'm not a soccer official so I don't know what is taught.

Offside is judged when the balll is kicked. If any part of the body that can legally play the ball is beyond the second to the last defender and then they become active in play, they are offside. Very tough call to make when only a foot or shoulder is what is offside.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View Post

Yeah that's what I thought. They didn't have a replay right in line with the last defender, but from what they did show at most her shoulder was barely beyond. But it was so close I would like to see those let go.Originally posted by BigPiney View Post

Yes, it was the same FSU player who got a yellow card when taking out Colohan.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View Post

She was quite a thug. I get the referee not wanting to tip the balance of a championship game with a second yellow, but given the severely of her first yellow, the second was absolutely warranted. I have seen straight reds on the type of tackle she did on Colohan.Originally posted by BlueK View Post

But a close offsides call is just fine.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View Post

Allowing the play to continue on a single offsides call that is in reality too close to determine in real time is nowhere near the game impact of putting a team down a player. One is allowing a single play to continue that you probably didn't see clearly anyway. The other is permanently altering strategy and potential scoring opportunities on both sides for the rest of the game.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View Post

I don't disagree, but BYU lost by one goal, so it seems pretty game impactful.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View Post

That offsides call was brutal. Cost us the championship."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Thoughts:
1) Penalty Kicks suck. I said this after the Santa Clare game as well. It is idiotic to fundamentally change how a game is played to decide a tie. I don't like it anymore than I would a field goal or free throw contest after a football or baskeball game
2) FSU seemed like the better team. They controlled possession, had better scoring chances, and would be a difficult team to ever score more than a single goal against
3) The offsides seemed very close, but was impossible to tell from the camera angle. I am so spoiled watching football which has multiple cameras on the field, it was hard to watch these games and their single camera view. I never saw a direct down the line view (which the official should have had) to know how close it was.
4) Great showing again by BYU fans. I'm not sure how well the Cougars actually "travel"- meaning coming from a long distance. But we definitely show up in droves, for a good game anywhere in the US
5) The second yellow card absolutely should have been issued, it really wasn't debatable. Honestly I was more surprised by the first one. On replay it seemed the FSU defender had the ball first and Mikalya was the one who arrived late.
6) Feel really, really bad for the girls, especially Cassidy Smith. She allowed zero goals in 220 mins of the Final Four, and guessed correctly on 4/5 penalty kicks; they were just too well struck for her do anything about them. After watching the Deep Blue episode about her, I'm a big fan. And once again PK sucks!
7) It's a great time to be a Cougar. Only a few years ago it seemed possible most of BYU's sports programs would fade into irrelevance. Now the exact opposite is true. No matter the sport BYU is putting a team on the field/pitch/court that has legitimate chances to be one of the best in country.

this seems like the result of a fundamental problem with the sport itself. you have a sport where it's not unusual for either team to score a point so you have to play a different game so it can end in a reasonable amount of time.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostThoughts:

pretty bizarre that a sport like that exists and even more so that it's as popular as it is.
