Anyone doing this? I talked to one of the other docs here who rides a lot and he said it's a lot of fun and really pretty. I'm thinking of doing the 65-mile section. I got my bike and have been riding a few times but only about 15 miles. I'm sure I could go further but I haven't pushed that yet. If I ride 2-3x/wk until October, can I be ready to do that much?

I'm seeing a lot of really cool bike tours/races since I got my bike. The Desperado Duel looks like a really nice ride, but obviously not for this year for me.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I'd never heard of it before, but it looks like a great ride--especially if you skip that Snow Canyon climb. You should be fine to do it. I'd probably plan a couple of days where you ride 35 & 45-50-ish, but two months away should be plenty of time to prepare.

Did you end up getting that Roubaix off of Craigslist? Or something else? I agree with BBB that if you at least get a 35-40 mile ride in before doing something like 65, you should be ok.

You missed the Desperado Duel, anyway. It was last weekend. I saw a bunch of riders still out around 4:30 or 5:00 while driving back from AZ. They were not having fun. It was pretty breezy. I talked with a couple of guys at a gas station in Panguitch. They were glad to have 'only' done the 100, not the 200.

Oh shoot, I thought it was this weekend. I did hear the Duel was usually windy, but that for the first 80 miles, it's a lot of fun.

Yeah, I got the Roubaix. I love it. I've been on a mountain bike all my life so the speed is a lot of fun. I'm not ready to give up my mountain bike yet, but it's a nice break.

For some reason, I'm a little nervous about going out on a 40-miler alone. I'm not sure how to increase mileage in cycling (in running--roughly a mile a week to your long run--pretty easy. what's the rule in cycling?). I'm also nervous about my shoes. The guy threw in brand new $200 shoes with the package and while they're a little tight (I figured I can sell on them on CL if they didn't work), I don't really notice them a few miles in; however, will they hold up for 40 miles? We have a cycling club in town that does group rides but my schedule hasn't worked out with them yet. So, I've limited my rides to 15 miles so far.

How often do you get out for the 15-milers? I'd probably push it up 10 miles per week. That is, do a 25-miler this weekend, try 30-35 the following weekend, etc. Would you like to come up and ride with us this weekend on the ride Borg is trying to organize? We're not all that fast, so you should be able to hang with us while picking up some tips on riding in a paceline, etc.

I can't come up this weekend bc I'm running this Bryce canyon 5-mile race and camping. And I think we probably have different definitions of "fast". I'll take you up on it next year.

10%-20% increase on your longest each week is a very safe rate to increase. If the shoes are ok for an hour or 90 miniutes, they will probabyl be ok for 2-3 hours.
              PLesa excuse the tpyos.
