Laterne rouge.
The lanterne Rouge (red lantern) is the tongue in cheek name of the last place in the Tour de France. It apparently refers to the light on a train caboose. I have bee watching the fight for last place with some interest. Currently, after the ITT today, Yauheni HUTAROVICH of Belarus holds down the LR position with an exactly 15 minute lead over Steven de Jongh of France. Now 15 minutes on the top end of the GC standings is a huge deficit, but when we are in LR territory, it can fade like your daddy’s best jeans (any Cat Stevens fans out there?). Fro example, Yauheni lost over 35 minutes on the leader on just the Grand Bornand stage. SO, these fellows can eat up the time like nobody’s business. Keep this in mind for the Mount ventoux stage on Saturday; se who collapses the worst and carries home the prestigious LR prize.
Keeo in mind that the LR is currently over three hours behind COntador. SO if the race was run all at once, you could see contador go by, go watch the Harry potter movie, have a quick meal, adn still return in plenty of time to see Yauheni struggle past. It would be like watchign RC and me ride around Tahoe.
