  • Mtn Biking in Tahoe

Sounds like we are meeting around 4:00 pm on Friday and will head out from the condo. I won't be around much next week so I wanted to get this out there for those that are participating. I made the executive decision (after talking to friend here at work) to ride what is known as either the Mt Rose Downhill, Kamikazi downhill, or the Tyrolian Downhill. All the same trail, 3 names. It must be good.

The start of the ride is about a 15 minute drive from where we are staying.

We can either park at the bottom of the hill and ride up the road and then then bomb the trail or we can shuttle and maybe hit the downhill twice and save our legs for the climbs on Saturday.

Looks like a great trail. Do we have to wear shin guards like the guy in video? I'll check in my son's soccer gear drawer. I may be able to find something that would work.

I predict that I will slide out or full-on crash no fewer than 5 times on that trail.

If we find that we don't like that trail, there are also a couple of sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail that are accessible not far from there.

That is a really great video. Nothing but singletrack and some cool jumps.

There were a few times in the vid that I felt like the handlebars were going to get clipped by a tree.

Also, it seems like they passed that one guy twice....one with a dog, once with a little girl.

The helmet cam gives the video a really cool, bouncy, creepy "Blair Witch Project meets Brian DePalma" vibe. I enjoyed the feeling of menacing pursuit in the first part of the video (the Blair Witch portion), but I loved the second portion where the rider is the lead. It is very reminiscent of DePalma's signature POV shot that he inserted into his movies. The wind in the mic only added to the sensation.

You guys are going to have a really fun time mountain biking.
      Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I was debating bring my mountain bike until I watched the video. It looks like a lot of fun but I'm pretty sure I would break something on my body during that ride. With me and mountain bikes it's not if I'm going down it's when and how hard.

We will be taking it easy down that thing. I don't plan on nor do I own any pads and I will take a controlled descent. As you saw, with all of jumps and elements, there were easier alternatives. That being said I am sure I will crash and lose some skin at some point. I always seem to do that when mountian biking.

Wow, guys, have a little confidence in yourselves. It's hard to tell how steep it is, but other than a couple split jumps, I thought the video looked fairly tame. (Famous last words?) Still, you definitely want to take it a little easy the first time down any trail.

Yeah, that is why I want to hit it twice. I don't think it is too steep, but on my front suspension 15 year old bike I tend not to hit the rock gardens and big airs. I know my limitations.

That said, I do tend to barrel down the smooth stuff. Should be awesome.

I was also thinking of some other videos of the same ride that I watched. Some of those dudes were going all out.
