  • Astana and nibali also have drug issues

Astana license pulled by the UCI and Nibali might not be able to ride in any grand tours.

So Nibali isn't named in any of the drug issues, however he could be without a team? That sucks for him, but I'd think as the leader of the team he'd have some power to keep things clean. It does make you wonder how he blew away the field last year in the TdF...of course the top two contenders didn't finish so blowing away the field might not mean as much. Then he finishes in a very pedestrian 20th place in Oman....

It was fun to follow the Froome/Contador match this past week. It should be a fun year with those two battling back and forth.

I think I'm ready for the spring classic races!

While an early season finish doesn't necessarily mean anything, your pint about his performance last year is well taken. He was so consistent I think a lot of people wondered if he was juiced.

And it's not that he doesn't have s team, it's that the team for which Hebrides can't go to those races. Like if the lakers got kicked out of the nba, Kobe couldn't try for a ring.

Right, I get that. What would his options be at this point? You'd think he'd have a clause in his contract for something like this to allow him to leave for a new team if they fail to keep their license. Maybe he needs one of those $250/hour lawyers from this site.

Its a good question. I think Astana will try to get a Continental license and seek the exemption. Even though Nibali is a fairly big deal, I'm not sure how likely it is his contract lets him walk away for this. OTOH, teams can drop riders for such offenses. I am just not sure if riders can drop teams. Besides, at this stage, I am not sure who among the UCI licensed teams would take him very easily. There is, of course, a plausible chance that Nibali is doping too, in which case he will not make those sorts of waves. He will just grin, bear it, and hope they get in on the exemption.

Nothing would make me happier for the sport of cycling for Astana to dissolve and Vinokourov's influence on the sport to scatter to the wind. Alas, he's the Lazarus of cycling, and (just like his Olympic win) he manages to do just enough to skirt the rules and stay in the sport.

Thats a good call. Vino had at last one amazing ride in almost every stage race e was in. They were all sort of Landis-esque. They were almost certainly drug fueled, too. But he does seem to land on his feet. Astana really should be gone. It does disappoint me to think that Nibali might also be a druggie. Just when you think it might be getting better....
