I should probably put this under Weekend Ride Reports, but I’m so vain I wish to give this special billing. I did a century today. Mrs. PAC had committed to work at our son’s swim meet, so I got up very early and drove alone to Lodi and did the Sunrise Century (and yes, the Credence song went through my head about a hundred times during the ride). The ride wasn’t too difficult (3800 feet of gain), with a very scenic route past Lake Camanche and the Pardee reservoir, and crossing the Mokelumne River multiple times. But man was it hot. It was “only” 100 degrees on the last leg, but on unshaded asphalt it seems more like 120. Lots of people sagged back to the start. Unfortunately, I combine the will and determination of Archaea with the skill and speed of PAC. This lamentable admixture required me to devote 7.5 hours to riding the 102 mile route. But I did it, dammit.
I knew it was going to be hot so I studied up on how to deal with the heat. Mainly, it’s Drink Drink Drink (I can tell a few of you are sitting up and taking note that maybe this cycling thing might not be so bad after all, but I doubt the beverages would be to your liking). I went through at least 12 water bottles en route—I lost track.
I feel surprisingly good after all that, although I’m really looking forward to a good night’s sleep. Curiously, per Garmin I burned through 6750 calories, but I’m really not very hungry. Time for another beverage.
