Williams loved to bike and was a big supporter of cycling. It's to bad he couldn't fight his demons with a nice ride out in the country.

Agreed. I was going to mention that as well. I seem to remember a big article written about that several years ago, but can't remember the publication or website. I think he'd gone out on a training ride with LA....

He and LA were really close and rode frequently. I remember when Lance didn't win his 7th Tour, Williams was in attendance and very prominent throughout the telecasts. Seems like he may have even pre-rode Alp d'Huez. But I could be misremembering that as well.
I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.

        • Shame about Williams. He liked to bike and loved rugby. Would have liked to have met him.

20 miles. Lots of wind on the way back. My Saturday group ride been rained out the past two weeks. I rode later in the day but I feel like I've gotten slower biking by myself.

Biking and acupuncture have done wonders on my legs. Just ran and 8;30s were too easy and felt good at 8;00 minute miles. Maybe I can get back to sub 7s ?

          • 20 miles. Have to leave town for a quick overnight business trip so will most likely miss biking on Thursday.

Two weeks from today we will be dropping my son off at BYU in Provo for his freshmen year. Where does the time go ?

Good job, you've been consistent! (And haven't complained about the wind since you revealed where you bike. )

              • Starting in the '70s, when one of our kids had a birthday, a major sports or academic accomplishment, etc., at the dinner table that evening he or she would have a red place setting (plate, bowl and goblet) in honor of the red letter day (it was pretty much the only time in our house when red was regarded as a good thing). The kids loved it. But as they left the nest, the red place setting was used ever less frequently, and with just two of us, not at all the past three years or so. Yesterday, at the end of an otherwise undistinguished ride, I came to a Strava segment where I knew I could get King of the Mountain status but had failed on multiple occasions (it's just three-tenths of a mile stretch in the flats). But this time, having taken it easy through most of the ride, I was able to jam it and finally got my KOM. True, I only managed to average 30 mph but for this sexagenarian, it was a big deal. I was disappointed I had no one to brag to as Mrs. PAC didn't return from her sisters reunion trip until late last night.

But this evening she called me to the dinner table where, for the first time in years, the red place setting was out in all its glory. It's good to be the king.

PAC I was just looking at that segment. Most people have no idea how hard it is to get a bike up to 30 mph let alone hold that speed for any length of time. Being lead out for Cavendish may be in your future.

                  • Rad PAC. Way to go. Red letter day indeed.

I've got my eye on a couple of local KOM segments. One is very attainable and the other is a major stretch. But whether or not I ever actually get them matters less than the fact that it gives me something to look forward to each ride.

KOMs are awesome. I have a couple in my area, two in particular on a heavily ridden route, both grabbed on the same day. I was solo on my tri bike after a 60 mile warm up feeling good with a 25 mph tail wind. Both seem pretty untouchable at this point (one is 29mph for 5.7 miles, the other is 34 mph for like 1.5 miles). I doubt I will be able to duplicate them.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I know how hard it is and I'm impressed. Good job PAC man

                        • PAC, congrats on your ride. That speed is very impressive.
Mtn, no I don't complain about the wind as I'm somewhat used to it. It makes me a tougher rider that's for sure.

20 miler today after missing yesterday. Drove me crazy not riding yesterday. Hopefully tomorrow I'll ride with my buddy who is faster. Had meetings and dinners out of town for work with lots of heavy drinkers and I was ready for my bike ride this morning.

                          • Gee, PAC, ever since you got that book on aging gracefully, you've aged backward.

Looks like I'm limited to the road bike for a while. I was chugging along on an uphill section when a loud metallic 'ching!' came from the crank area. The frame sagged, and I thought I'd broken the suspension. Turned out it was the frame instead. Sure hope Santa Cruz has a spare rear triangle hanging around somewhere. The bike's a 2005 model.

                            • 20 miler. Rode with my buddy today. 73 minutes. I feel fairly fit. Will run or bike again later today.

                              • I just noticed that Netflix has a 2012 French film available for view, Bicycling with Moliere. Not sure if this is our Moliere with a GoPro, or someone else.
