Time for this year's thread to go up. Today starts the registration period. The race is celebrating its 30th B-Day this year, but other than that I didn't see any big changes.

I did the fun ride last year, but am considering getting a license and going for the CAT5 this year. Does anybody know which is more competitive to get in between the two? I have a friend here in Iowa that will be doing his first LOTOJA and we want to submit to the category that gives us the best chance to ride. Personal goal is Sub 10hr30min for me this season.

So, who else is planning on a day of beautiful suffering?

It's looks like I will be signing up again for it. Unlike last year I plan on being ready this year. Hawkeye we have found the best way to get in is to be a member of a team and list the other member of your team. Also I think you should have an easier time getting in being a CatV than doing the fun ride. My first three years I actually registered CatIV and it worked out great. I'm not a great climber and it gave me a head start on the faster CatV guys so that I was able to ride with them when it turned flat again.

Thanks for the advice. I've been considering going Cat5 anyway, just so I can start logging races to one day get (and likely stay forever) at Cat4.

I'm excited for this season. Last year was a learning experience. I had no time goals, I just wanted to finish. I think I can really improve this year - shortening my stops alone will carve off a good notch of time.

Pretty sure I couldn't commit the time to training I'd need this year and still have time for Ragnar, Beast & Tough Mudder training. Maybe next year...
