  • Post-ride dining tips.

I didn't eat anything for a couple of hours after Saturday's long ride. Then I became really hungry and went to the grocery store (and yes, grocery shopping on an empty stomach is not a good thing). I returned home with a big slab of hot baby back ribs, a grilled Kielbasa, a platter of sushi, and a loaf of fresh sourdough. I gave a few of the ribs and half the Kielbasa to Mini-Me (the missus was out of town--hence there were no nutritional controls in place at the PAC household for the weekend), and sat down to enjoy the 'Nova game. I proceeded to consume EVERYTHING, although I left a third of the sourdough loaf for later ingestion, due mainly to having run out of butter. Later that evening, I felt wretched, and imagined myself as one of the bloated sheep in Far From the Madding Crowd whose lives were spared only by a rancher spiking their bellies before they burst. I didn't follow that treatment, and it wasn't until morning (Fast Sunday? No problem!) that I knew I would survive.

Anyway, I've learned my lesson: don't consume an entire animal after a long ride. But what should one eat after a four-hour cycling trip? I'll obey. Honest.

PAC, one of the main benefits of a 4 hour ride is that you CAN eat whatever you want to eat. Even if it is an entire animal. Some of the things I love after a long ride (not that I've been on many long rides lately):

Burritos with tons of beans and shredded beef
Pancakes with peanut butter and syrup
Beans and Rice simple but soooo good
    In-n-out burger

What's your beans and rice recipe?

[[I'm afraid the answer is going to be "beans and rice"]]

I usually go online and google Brazilian beans and rice and then try and follow that but I use 7% ground beef instead of sausage.

I like that the meal should be pretty much guilt-free, but I think I'll be better off with a meal weighted a little heavier on the side of carbs, and a little less on the fats and protein. The burritos sound good.

Happily, even with the food orgy Saturday, I dropped a couple of pounds over the weekend.

My favorite post-gym snack (while not on the scale of a 4-hour cycle fest, admittedly):

2 or 3 generous spoonfuls of peanut butter
            1 sliced banana
            couple handfuls of dried blueberries
            handful of nuts...usually almonds

Put it all into a small bowl and enjoy. It is actually as sweet as eating a bowl full of ice cream, but way less saturated fat and salt. Lots of protein and good level of anti-oxidants.
            Fitter. Happier. More Productive.
