The new Garmin 1000 is coming out soon (or maybe it's already out). Anyway, I've watched a couple ads for it and it seems like an awesome device complete with maps, segments, connectivity to phone so you know when a text message or call is coming in, etc. However, the price is $599 and the size isn't much smaller than a smart phone, which leads me to wonder at what point do you just attach your phone to the bike and forget about the separate GPS device altogether. What would be the big difference? I'd imagine at some point all the stuff that connects to the garmin (heart rate monitor, cadence sensor, gear shift records for Di2, etc.) will jus connect with your smart phone.

I guess the real question is the 1000 worth the money. I can see it being useful and fun, especially if you are in places with which you are not familiar, however for my weekly 20-40 mile rides around my area I'm not sure it's worth the money.

Here's the shorter clip I've seen a couple times:

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I think most of that stuff already exists to connect to your phone, like the wahoo devices to use with cyclemeter or strava, for example.
      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

It seems like equipment is getting closer to having both ANT+ and Bluetooth capability (or at least availability). For example, I believe Samsung phones now come with the ANT+ protocol, PowerTap now offers a Bluetooth cap in addition to the traditional ANT+ cap, etc.

I've seen the ANT+ adapters which makes me wonder why people would drop $600 on a Garmin device unless it's just the coolness factor. Makes me wonder if this device is the last of it's kind as I'd expect Garmin to put there money into developping a decent iPhone app that functions just like the 1000.

Running warehouse has the Garmin 910XT on sale for 25% off plus you can get another $50 off through a mail-in rebate (I can't believe companies still do those). Anyway, this is a tender mercy for me as my 305 is dying a slow death as well as my Timex I use for lap swimming. The timing is perfect.

REI has the same deal going for its anniversary sale. I don't know what Running Warehouse's return policy is like, but REI's is quite good (even after a time limit was added).
