  • New cycling shorts

Ok...I need some suggestions for some nice cycling shorts. I'm in the market to get another one this summer, and may even venture into the bib-short scene...not sure if I can make that jump just yet...but could be persuaded.

So...you cycling gurus...what shorts do you just love? Love the pad, love the fabric...etc.

I like Pearl Izumi bib shorts. For price, comfort and quality I think they are the best. I've got some Descente bibs also that I like but the Pearl Izumi's just seem bomb proof. Stay away from Hencapie shorts. I hated them. Also go onto Bonktown.com and they run deals on nice shorts all the time.

Have been monitoring bonktown.com for a while now...I haven't seen nary a Pearl Izumi anything come up yet. Will keep watching.

Realcyclist.com is also a good site...however, I was thinking of expanding my horizons to maybe check into other brands. I like Pearl Izumi as well, but was curious for others opinions on others. Park City has a Pearl Izumi outlet that I will most likely check out soon.

Shorts/bibs are like saddles: it depends on your build. I don't care for the Pearl Izumi's I've had, because they ride extra low in front and feel extra bulky in the pad. I understand the low rider thing in the front: when you're leaning forward over the handle bars, you take up the slack and don't have extra fabric there. But it feels too low to me. The extra bulk in the pad bugs me.

I've never liked anything from Descente. Just doesn't fit me like I want, and the fabric doesn't feel as good. Too hot, too tight, too bad. Maybe I haven't tried the right variant.

I've liked Louis Garneau stuff, though. I have several shorts and a couple of bibs. One of the bibs is an inch shorter in the length than I like, but the overall fit, fabric, and pad work well for me.

Bonktown has a pretty cool add-on for Firefox. You can also try classiccycling.com for closeout prices on all kinds of clothing.
I have nothing else to say at this time.

I've always heard to "buy the best cycling shorts you can afford". Well....I may put it to the test....though I can't afford these, yet I have an Amazon.com gift card that would knock the price down to $100.

Opinions on whether they would be worth it or not? I have checked out the shorts, and they have a killer chamois

Thoughts? Oh...and in case you're wondering...I can neither confirm or deny that that is actually me in the photo.

I've never had the money to buy any Assos stuff but if I did I would. I've heard nothing but good about their clothing.

Wow, if it's only $100 out of your pocket, go for it. Assos are supposed to be awesome. But the people who say that also hand-wash them rather than putting them through a wash cycle. I guess you'd feel obligated to do that after paying $250 for a set of bibs.

That's what I was thinkin'! On order...kind of excited.

The final "nudge" was when for my daughters b-day on Saturday, I agreed to buy her a little 'pet lizard'. A "bearded dragon" lizard to be precise. $40, what could be the harm, right? Um...."no".

$40 for one bearded dragon lizard.
$50 for one "starter kit" acquarium
$39 for one specialty light for UV rays
                  $20 for acquarium climbing/sunning rock
                  $5 for acquarium water dish
$10 for live baby crickets (eewwee)
                  $10 for live cricket container
                  .
                  .
                  .
...approximately $190 later, we have one bearded dragon (not me) in my home.

Look of daughters face full of excitement with accompanying hug and "I love you, your the best daddy!" ..... priceless. <sigh>

                    Got the shorts!

Will have to give them a whirl and report back to CUF. Pretty fancy shmancy...they came in a double box, with a catalog on how they are made, the quality, warranty, laundry bag to wash them in, chamois cleaner and chaff cream.

Now...if I could only ride as good as these shorts look.

Very cool. May I suggest that you put a little note on them that says "Do not cut these shorts off of me no matter how badly I am hurt". I'm still a little upset that they cut one of my favorite jerseys off of me when I went down and it would be a shame to see those shorts cut up.

Great suggestion! "Please bury me in these shorts". <very funny RC> However, there is a bad/sad story behind your experience.

Just don't let the lizard or the crickets anywhere near those shorts.

                            QUOTE]

I'm a believer. Best shorts I've ever owned. I'm also a believer in 'bib' shorts. Had resisted the bibs as I just didn't like the 'look'. But, the benefits of how the bib shorts feel, how they keep everything where they should be...love them. And as others have told me in the past....I will never buy another set of shorts that "aren't" bib shorts ever again. Was a great decision to pull the trigger on these shorts.

Good to hear. What is the inseam length on those? Most of my shorts have a similar length, but one pair of bibs is 1/2 inch shorter, and it kind of bugs me (partly because it feels funny, and partly because it exposes a non-tan ring around the leg).
