Yes it is. I love mountain biking, but why limit yourself to one discipline? There are times when I like to fly down a curving mountain road; there are times when cleaning a rock ledge is just awesome. I don't know. Cars, exhaust, idiot drivers, smog versus a grove of aspen, a babbling brook, elk, or a stark desert with coyotes and endless vistas? To me, there's no competition.Originally posted by John McClain View PostYes it is. I love mountain biking, but why limit yourself to one discipline? Having taken young men on some serious mountain bike rides in New Mexico, it is probably well and good that you give the group some easy stuff to ride. I say this, not because I have had young men get injured on some of the rides I take them on, but because we always seem to have an adult leader get injured on the rides we go on. They are the are the ones you have to watch out for- bunch of neophytes!Originally posted by dut99002 View PostI just cleaned and oiled by Gary Fisher. We're taking the young men to a local lake for biking tomorrow morning. We have done some crazy rides with youth. We took deacons on the White Rim trail in Moab. That was an amazing experience and the boys involved earned by undying respect. Did it in 3 days, and all of the boys met the challenge of finishing the final climb without stopping.
Probably the scariest was shuttling them to the top of Bountiful Peak and letting them bomb down on their Huffy and Murray bikes. It's an forearm burning, kidney busting ride anyways. A couple had their brakes go out halfway down and they just kept going. I think the opening prayer may have done some good that night, as everyone made it down injury free.

Went mountain biking in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains today. First time on the mountain bike since November. The weather was pretty decent and I still have a modicum of fitness left on the bike after winter, so it wasn't too painful. It was pretty muddy in places, due to snowmelt on the north facing slopes. It's amazing how much a little mud can suck the life out of you an an uphill slope. Still, it was great to hit the trails.

*sigh* I emailed Moab. It's even muddy and snowy down there. I wonder how St. George is doing.Originally posted by mtnbiker View PostSounds great. It'd be nice to get out on the bike. Maybe you need to retitle the thread 'mud' instead of 'dirt', though.
Well, it's almost March. Dirt season is a coming. I keep telling myself that.

Moab deserves every accolade it gets for mountain biking, but the last few times I have been there in the shoulder seasons, the crowds have been outrageous. Because of that, I avoided Moab last year and visited some new trails in Colorado and New Mexico instead. This March, I'm heading to Arizona - before it gets too warm there.Originally posted by The Fourth Nephite View Post*sigh* I emailed Moab. It's even muddy and snowy down there. I grew up in Arizona. There are some good trails there.
