Lee Cummard underrated by his own fans?

draftexpress.com breaks down various statistics for all the SFs in the draft, including Euros and ranks them in each statistical category.

Cummard dominated these stats last year and pretty much dominated again this year, albeit a little less than last. These numbers certainly don't tell the entire story, but they do show that BYU had a very special player in Cummard and I'm not sure he gets the credit from BYU fans he should in terms of all-time players. The fact that people try to compare Travis Hansen with him pretty much says it all.

some of the impressive stats in which Cummard ranks very high:

Points per 40 minutes adjusted for pace - Cummard is 3rd overall

True shooting percentage - Cummard is second overall and tied for first among college players

Assists per 40 adjusted for pace - Cummard is 3rd overall and first among college players

Turnovers per 40 minutes adjusted for pace - Cummard turned it over less all but one guy

Assist/TO ratio - Cummard is #1 by a wide margin

Pure Point Rating - Cummard is number 1 overall and it isn't close

Rebounds per 40 - Cummard ranks 5th among NCAA players

Blocks per 40 - Cummard is third overall

Player Efficiency Rating (PER) - Cummard is #1 overall

Efficiency per 40 minutes - Cummard is #1 overall

I've never understood the distaste for Travis Hansen. Was it the hair?

Hansen did a lot of good things, but in the end he was still a shooting guard who wasn't a very good shooter.

Pretty much. And an overrated defender as well.

Honestly, the distaste I have is probably most born of the fact that so many fans thought he could play, when in fact he very average.

I think a lot of folks thought he could play because he brought an attitude to the floor that isn't very common amongst BYU players. It was that same attitude that was why so many rival fans didn't like him.

See and I always thought the attitude was fake. He liked to act tough when in reality he played like a pussy.

That's a very good point. I hadn't thought about it being a fake attitude. I just thought he was being a punk - which I suppose is a fake attitude, eh?

Probably. And it's just how I saw it. Obviously most BYU fans would disagree with me.

To his credit, he was a great athlete. I heard he used to kick Arajuo's ass in the weight room. Supposedly, he could bench 300+. Not bad for a basketball player.

Crazy that he has put together a 7 year pro career, and every season he gets calls from NBA teams offering him deals. I expect that this may be the year that he finally accepts and comes back to the NBA. His numbers in Russia are pretty solid too: 17.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg while shooting 68.7 FG and 46.3% 3PT.[4]

You keep thinking that. He has had a nice career in Europe, but he was before and will be completely outclassed if he ever tries to comeback in the NBA. He was an embarrassment in his first stint in the NBA. Not much more embarrassing than he was in college, but still.

I didn't know about his strength, but I thought he was a great athlete.

I think you also need to factor in the period of BYU basketball in which he played. He was part of the rebuilding effort under Steve Cleveland. BYU basketball had been nothing to talk about for a while and while he was there BYU went to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1994. We also made a respectable appearance (if there is such a thing) in the NIT one of those years. For the first time in almost a decade BYU basketball had something to talk about and he was one of the leaders on those teams. The fact that he was drafted in the second round galvanized his place in many fans' minds. He was a "great" player even if he didn't pan out in the NBA.

Cummard came after that, saw similar success and doesn't have the cocky attitude to distinguish himself or add to it.

Personally, I think Cummard is a better player. I can't really point to any stats to back it up - it's just my opinion.

I agree with that. I never thought Hansen was as great as many fans thought he was. I'm just trying to address the issue of why many fans prefer Hansen over Cummard. I think it's pretty clear that Cummard is a better player and there's one stat that backs it up: MWC player of the year Cummard-1 Hansen-0
