best thing about pope as it relates to these transfers is that he takes his swings. he missed a lot, but when you take a lot of shots, you will hit a few. in this case, it doesn't hurt to throw your name in the hat.

I was pretty surprised at how many transfers had BYU in their top 5. He's doing something right.

            Should we be concerned?

            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

My outsider impression is that Pope genuinely loves being at BYU and would be fine spending the rest of his career here. However, John Calipari's total compensation package was $8.5 million this year at Kentucky. Anyone know how much Pope is currently making?

                    Per the above link:

SALARIES OF BIG 12 BASKETBALL COACHES (as of April 2023):

                    1.) Kansas – Bill Self – 5.725 million

                    2.) West Virginia – Bob Huggins – 4.15 million

                    3.) TCU – Jamie Dixon – 3.5 million

                    4.) Baylor – Scott Drew – 3.350 million

                    5.) Houston – Kelvin Sampson – 3 million

                    6.) Oklahoma State – Mike Boynton – 3 million

                    7.) Texas – Rodney Terry – 3 million

                    8) Texas Tech – Grant McCasland – 3 million

                    9.) Oklahoma – Porter Moser – 2.8 million

                    10.) Iowa State – T.J. Otzelberger – 2.5 million

                    11.) Cincinnati – Wes Miller – 2.5 million

                    12.) Kansas State – Jerome Tang – 2.1 million

                    13.) UCF – Johnny Dawkins – 1.1 million

BYU – Mark Pope -not disclosed

Pope was making $1.275M at UVU so it's gotta be at least 1.5X that I would think. I want to say that the rumors when Pope was initially hired is that the salary was $1M and there was a booster or some group that matches that amount, so about $2M. He's since signed an extension and bonuses and yearly escalations could have him a bit higher now.

The question IMO is how much Kentucky might want Pope (if UK comes hiring, Pope is gone). I doubt Pope's at the top of the list, but he's gotta be on the list. Our early exit from the tourny didn't help his list position.

I am 97% sure Pope would go to UK in a second if offered.

if we had made a run to the final 4, he probably would have had a decent chance at the job, probably one of the top 3 or 4 candidates and maybe a 20%-30% of getting. Now, with zero tournament wins in his career (sad face), I think his chances are likely very low.

I was actually happy to see the news this morning. I’d like to see UK lock up a coach now so the position isn’t available if we happen to have a couple of big years in a row (I can dream).
