Could Capitalism improve the ROC

Though I'm still not a fan of the name, the ROC (and seating changes) have really improved the student section, over the last couple years. It feels like the enthusiasm is there, but other than mindless screaming (which I like), there is little to no coordination of cheers. The Hurd shows how big of impact a well-organized student section can have. BYU has almost exclusively smart kids; many are very creative, and most are really poor. I wonder how well a financial incentive to come up with a creative, unique cheer would work. What if there was a $500-$1000 award given to the student(s) who come up with best cheer/chant? I would certainly donate to the funding of said award.

Lots of things would have to be worked through:
* Who judges the award?
* It would have to be implemented at games, to really be judged if it works or not. There would be a huge advantage for the ones selected to try during the Gonzaga games, over the ones used during Portland
* It obviously would have to be BYU approved. Lots of the Cameron chants, and all of the ones used at Maryland, wouldnt past muster.
* Should money be given for more than one?

Worthwhile pursuit, or stupid idea?

The ROC does have organized cheers. They hand out a pamphlet to all members called "For the strength of ROC"

The intros before Iowa St. were genius. When they said "hi" to the opposing team players. In unison you hear "HI! DEANDRE!" "HI! MELVIN!"

Unlike you stingy SOBs, I'm not looking to make money. I'm looking for a way to try and motivate a better crowd. I'm being willing to invest for the greater good of The Lord's University. The question is would it work?

Our HS basketball team did an annual 6th man award given to the best fan. The team and coaches voted and the winner attended the end of season banquet with the team and was given a team jacket. My junior and senior year it went to a kid who played as a freshman and sophomore but never made the varsity team. He turned into our team's biggest fan and attended every game home and away. He dressed as a viking. The award actually generated a bunch of fan enthusiasm amongst the student body.

I like what the ROC is becoming. They still have a ways to go to become like the Hurd or Show, but I think over the next couple of years the product on the court will spur enthusiasm. The biggest thing that the ROC can do is make each game an event; the games aren't just a thing to attend but the thing to attend. And it has done well with that with the giveaways, pizza for the campers, etc.
