According to one player, Matt Adams, a 36-year-old high school teacher, “We had one guy who played with us and he was like, ‘If any of you have any advice you could give me that would be great because I never played basketball before.’”

Harries played in a league that, according to Adams, includes teachers, salesmen, a tax attorney and a guy who works for the CDC. There are teams called, “Net Profit,” “Respect My Car” and “Make it Drizzle.”
"Respect my Car" is actually a cool name.

Some of the baptist gyms around here are pretty cool. My son played in a church rec league and the church had two full size courts with bleachers on both. At halftime they'd have a preacher come out and teach the Word while the kids went to the locker room. I think that during the playoffs they even had two smoke machines that went off while they announced the players and had the players run through a blow up arch onto the court. There were even paid refs at the games. The LDS church could learn a thing or two from the baptists in this regard.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

We had paid refs for a year, and played in a local rec center. That was better than the "Call your own fouls" year.

I am sure that Parrot Head will be here shortly to say that the paid refs we had were actually worse than our stake's head ref.
