I don't ever see Calvert as anything more than a role player but I don't think he sucks. I think he will be a fine role player as a junior and senior coming off the bench for 15-20 mpg at max. I think Calvert will be better than Cusick as a senior. It is when the Sam Burgesses or Ben Murdocks or Brock Zylstras or Craig Cusick's start that you know you have a serious talent disparity when BYU plays really good teams. However, BYU is still BYU and it will rarely have 9 really highly recruited guys on a roster at one time. However, for most of the years after Calvert's mission they will have 6 or 7 and that should be enough to have a good team and what they need from Calvert is to just come in as an upperclassmen and not spaz and make huge mistakes. I think by then he will be able to come in and give Chatman, Haws or Emery a breather for 5-8 minutes a half while not giving BYU a great deal but not hurting them enormously either. It would be nice to have a program where the subs are just young underclassmen that are future stars, but that is an unrealistic expectation for BYU. BYU needs these types of role players and it helps enormously if they can be older and experienced guys who have been in the system for a long time - I am thinking guys like Mike Rose or even Logan Mangusson as an example. Older RMs who love BYU and are more than happy to not be stars. Jake Schoff was my poster child for this type of player.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I think he is getting minutes because of injuries that set Winder and Delgado back and because the other options as backups are just not legitimate D1 athletes. He shouldn't be playing even role player minutes this year but Rose has no other options. But I think he will accept a similar role post mission and will be fine doing it.Originally posted by wapiti View PostI think he must be showing well in practice because there is no other explanation for his increased minutes over the last 3 games. He has loose handles right now, there is no doubt about that, but the kid can dribble and escape pressure. He also has moxy. Yeah, I'm with Mol on this one. We were up for the first 10 or 12 minutes, then it was downhill except for a late run to pull us within six in the second half. They probably had four or five sick looking alley-hoops. Davies did have a monster game (something like 19 boards).Originally posted by Moliere View PostThe first 10 minutes were great, then we got killed. I'm probably thinking about the garbage time alley-oops and it probably was the 3-pointers that put them on that 20-2ish run in the last part of the first half. In any case, our dismal showing in that game was not worth the 3 hour drive up and 3 hour drive back.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Calvert is not, nor will ever be a Jimmer. However, many people forget what James Taft was like as a freshman, and even a sophomore. He could always shoot, but he was not nearly as good handling the ball early in his career. I'm not sure which of the UNLV guards it was (Wink Adams?), but during the tournament one year Jimmer could barely get the ball past halfcourt.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostI see a potential for significant improvement to his game, unlike guys like Cusick/Zylstra. I watched the replay here in Tucson. I'm on a business trip, and was at dinner with clients while the game was going on. Being on ESPN is awesome, because I can get back to the hotel and replay the game on ESPN 3. And, if for some reason ESPN is giving me problems, BYUTV is the backup.
Austin does look like a much different player the last 3 games. I'm not sure if the competition level in the NIT is lower than that in the WCC...I doubt that. I did feel that early in the year he seemed to be thinking too much on the floor, rather than just getting in the flow of the game. I also think the team is playing much more loose as a whole. They were pressing trying to get into the NCAA's and had that "can't lose another game" mentality. The team developed this type of anti-killer instinct against USF and USD and it was ugly to see them lose. Now it's just go out, play ball, have fun. The team is talented enough where if they play loose, they can give most teams a run for their money.
I also love watching Haws shoot off the dribble. That guy is money. Can't believe he is only a sophmore, he's so consistent. He kind of reminds me of Steve Kerr.

I don't think he's horrible. In the non-conference schedule, there were even times when I thought he might become pretty good.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostAm I the only one who thinks Calvert isn't horrible?"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

As bad a rap as Utah (against BYU), Wyoming, Duke, or even Maryland fans get, no one can compete with ASU fans' dbaggery when Kerr played against them.

Calvert has been horrible this year. I am absolutely amazed that he was the 5A player of the year in Colorado. It tells you the state of high school ball in Colorado I guess. What amazes me is that he averaged 25+ points a game in high school and now when he shoots, he barely hits rim. The only thing I can think of is that he gets to amped up while he is in the game and so his adrenoline just messes up his shot. I think the maturity that comes from the mission will definitely help his game. At this point, it can't get worse.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI don't ever see Calvert as anything more than a role player but I don't think he sucks. I do think it might be time to cut Winder loose and I would give Harward one more year to find some kind of game before cobra striking him.

Did I miss anything?
My thinking: Kerr was known as a 3 point specialist. Tyler doesn't play that role on this BYU team, because he is valued much more for his mid-range game. But my guess is that if he wanted to make it in the NBA, his skillset would have to be something along the lines of Kerr's. Tyler's best skill is shooting the ball, is it feasible that he could develop that skillset enough where he could make it in the NBA.
