Seriously, if there is a league with worse officiating I'd like to see it. It's bad enough that BYU keeps wetting the bed but these refs make a bad game unwatchable. The hard-on they get for offensive foul calls is astounding.

I am still trying to figure out what the offensive foul was that they called on Haws there in the last minute. That was huge. Carlino choking at the line was big too. Ultimately it was the offensive boards and FT shooting that doomed BYU. How many times did we defend great for 30-32 seconds only to bail SMC out with a foul or reset the clock with an offensive board? Those kinds of plays are back breakers. And we did that a lot. SMC imposed their game on us. We didn't run. We couldn't run. We were held to just 41 FGA. That is low for this team that averages better than 60. That Utah State game was a grind with the half court offense and constant fouling. And yet BYU still managed to get up 13 more shots. If BYU managed 50 FGA in Moraga last night we win.

This team just isn't as good as I hoped. The game plan is clear. Get in Haws' jersey and don't let him get off. Let everyone else beat you. Davies had a nice game, but we needed Carlino and company to step up. We just don't get any production from anyone else.

It's games like these where we really miss Rogers. He would have made a big difference this season with his ability to stretch the floor and consistent 10 ppg. We also miss CC and his defensive rebounding in the paint. We'd be a much different team this year with those two guys in the line up. Losing them hurt more than I think most realize.

That said, I am optimistic going forward. We get more athletic next year with KC coming back and the addition of Mika. I expect us to run, run and run. I also think we'll be better defensively. Austin has to get better I imagine because he can't get worse and BZ, who is often the worst defender on the floor, will be gone . I can't wait until the LP kids are here running their game. There is some fun basketball ahead. Also Delly finally graduates. So there is that. Hopefully Olynyk goes pro.

I just can't pin point what is wrong with the officiating in this league. Inconsistency? Favoritism? Trigger happy? How did Delly have zero fouls?

That being said there is a ceiling to this year's team and its 3rd place in the WCC. I don't think any amount of coaching can change that.

I agree with everything you've said here. When Davies didn't close out on the 3-pt shot in the corner, scratch that, when he backed away from the shooter after playing 33 seconds of great defense I about lost it. I realize he was retreating for a rebound but it just wasn't a good decision. The very next trip Hawes inexplicably released the pressure on an interior drive and the shot went up uncontested with about 3 seconds on the shot clock. I have to hand it to Dave Rose though, the team was clearly determined to play better defense as IMO that was the best zone defense we've played all year (which might not be saying much I guess).

Ultimately yes, the team just currently isn't great but I am excited for the future. I just wish we weren't in the horrid conference going forward.

It wasn't that it was swayed one way really, it's that they are wildly inconsistent. They are timid, than strangely assertive. They really just aren't well trained. They would be good high school refs.

Quick aside: Anyone know what the semaphore signal for "I don't know what-the-Hell-to-call" is because I think I saw it last night? It's been more than two decades since my last trip to the East Fork of the Bear River so I'm a bit rusty but when a Gaels player went down with the ball and was granted a time out the ref under the basket started doing a series of signals and hops that I believe indicated his ship was listing and taking on water. He pointed to the player, jumped up in the air, signaled 30 sec time-out, pointed to the Gaels bench, and then went into his distress pattern. It was odd.

I didn't see it. I didn't care to rewind at that point because that was the final nail and they didn't show a replay. Haws was visibly frustrated last night. He gets mugged quite a bit off the ball without getting help from the refs.

I think BYU does a poor job of adjusting to the refs.

In past games, refs have demonstrated that they don't value position defense and that it's completely acceptable to be slap happy and hope for a steal. BYU continues with position defense, doesn't use their hands like the refs are allowing, and find themselves in trouble.

Last night the refs demonstrated that they don't want you to push someone in the back, but if you want to hop over the top of them going for a rebound, that is completely acceptable.

I'm looking forward to the time when Haws has been in the league long enough that he gets to the FT line when his defender bumps him in the slightest, but is permitted to throw a saddle on the guy he is defending and ride him all the way to the basket.

I guess I'm looking forward to Carlino being a senior and getting those calls too.

But my biggest complaint was BYU's inability to finish on defense. The Gaels were waiting for 5 seconds or less on the shot clock to shoot it - but BYU seemed to be missing that fact and several times played tough for 28-30 seconds, but would then lay off just enough to allow the Gaels to shoot. And for whatever reason, they had a knack for it most of the second half of the game - though they did pay for it with a shot clock violation a couple of times.

Pelado is correct, Haws gave a two handed shove right in to the chest of mouthpiece sending him about a 4 feet. It was a good call, as usual Haws does not do a very good job of keeping his cool.

He took a bad shot at the end of that game, carlinos missed free throws, and the lack of awareness with the shot clocking running down really killed us.

Davies had a great offensive game and I thought the game plan for the team as a whole was very good. We executed our plays, we played in control, and defensively the zone was very good.

Dellevadova made some great shots in pressure situations (Like that one handed runner) and SMC grabbed some timely rebounds.

Gonzaga will be us by double digits at home and I actually think we beat St. Marys in the WCC tourney and lose in the finals to Gonzaga.

The play that annoyed me was when Davies backed off on that three pointer with about 1.5 seconds left on the shot clock. Why back off at that point? Just stand there with your hand in the guys face. Davies turned around and gave him a clear look.

Haws is a terrible ballhandler and that contributes to some of the extremely awkward shots he chucks up. He also does a poor job of squaring up off the dribble.

He really needs to work on getting stronger and being able to change directions off the dribble during the offseason.

Well SMC will no longer be relevant for the foreseeable future. The NCAA dropped the hammer on them today. I can't see Bennett keeping his job, but there is nobody close to his caliber they can hire under these sanctions.
