It's a great day to be a Cougar!

Former BYU RB coach Joe Dupaix would always tweet this out to announce another commitment to the team. I think this is a good thread where we post any news on recent commits. It can be used for both football and basketball.

BYU basketball received a commit today from Jake Toolson for the class of 2014. Toolson is a 6'5 205lb guard out of Gilbert Arizona. He is the nephew of Danny Ainge and Andy Toolson.

His brother Ryan is a legend at UVU and is having a nice pro career in Europe. Jake is bigger than Ryan but less athletic. In fact I would compare his athleticism to Brock Zylstra. The difference is that Ryan can flat shoot the rock. He is a shooter and something this team lacks.

Toolson had some nice offers from Arizona St, Boston College, and Utah State.

Maybe the most important part of Jakes recruitment is that it gives BYU an even better chance to land Payton Dastrup. Jake and Payton are close friends and have been playing AAU ball together since they were kids.

Big in that this means Dastrup is likely to come. I know he was congratulating Jake when he got his offer. What are his mission plans?

      Great thread idea, CJ.

Would Dastrup have been a done deal had BYU offered him earlier?

Zac Dawe committed yesterday to Bronco. He's a DLine prospect. I believe his brother walked on the team as well. He goes to Pleasant Grove High.

He's supposed to be one of the top lineman in the state for 2014, and these are the kinds of kids we need to go to BYU. It all starts in the trenches. As a team that doesn't recruit corners as well, our strength has to be in the front seven on D.
Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

After watching his highlights I am not sure how I feel about him. He looks like one of those kids that has developed faster than his peers and is bigger and stronger than everyone else. He really has no technique and uses brute strength to over power his opponent. I am not sure how that will translate at the next level.

He needs to put on weight which he does have the frame for, I am sure he keeps his weight where it is so he can wrestle.

It will be interesting to see how he progresses over the next year.

Trey Dye, son of the great James Dye commits to be a cougar.

After praying an talking about it with my family, I've decided to verbally commit to BYU! #Legacy #RiseUp

I like legacy kids, but this kid seems like a much bigger risk than McTyer's kid. Hopefully he can return kicks like his old man.

Why does he seem to be a risk?

Risk is probably the wrong word. He just seems like a walk on at best.

He's tiny, just 5'8. And he hasn't been very productive with just over 200 yards on 16 receptions. He's scored 3 TDs. 2 of which were rushing. He's not a special teamer like his dad. He returned just 4 punts all year. He's never had more than 3 catches in a game.

You're measuring the wrong things. Production on the football field is meaningless when compared to character off the field.

That said, is there some simple reason why his numbers were so low? Was he backing up a future NFL player?

Seriously. I think my HS numbers were better than that, but I was only backing up a future JCer.
