I am optimistic that this team can be as good as last year. Meaning they compete for the WCC crown and get a bid to the tournament. Really though I just want to see some improvement in our core for a 2010-2011-like run next year with Jabari.

If we don't lose any bigs, I'll be disappointed if they don't get a decent tourney seed and at least win one game there. A sweet 16 would eclipse my expectations. Not making the tourney or going one and done is unacceptable, especially with our backcourt.

I say same as last year. I thought last year's team overachieved in the beginning of the year and then underachieved a little at the end.

We lose Noah and Charles. Everybody gains a year experience and we pick up Haws. That feels like it's a wash on paper. Depends on how much that improvement is, particularly from Carlino and Austin. Those two guys both have a lot of upside.

I think they will be better barring injuries. I think the most improved player will be Matty Carlino. I think Haws will be a better wing player than anyone BYU had last year. While having both Hartsock and Davies together would be better than having just Davies, I believe Davies this year will be a much better player than either Hartsock or Davies of last year. I also think that the injuries of last year came at times that were unfortunate and were of the the lingering nature that it impacted BYU quite negatively. Rose built a model around a plan to have Collinsworth and Stephen Rogers and losing them forced him remodel later in the year. I think the fact that the air is cleared with those two will allow him to build this year's club around the players he knows he will have. I think the team will be about as good as it was the years BYU lost first round games. If Nate Austin significantly improves then perhaps BYU could get a first round win. I think BYU could peak with some top 25 attention, perhaps being ranked, and get an 8 or 9 seed and likely lose a close first round NCAA game. I think Haws will tire and the lack of quality depth will catch up. But I do think we will be building a core of youngsters that will be really good the next two years.

I believe I am really looking forward to watching BYU BB on the cold dark nights that are coming. I have grown to HATE the winter months in Utah.

All people living in areas with cold and snowy winters need to take up skiing or snowmobiling or something that is fun in the winter - otherwise they can be brutal.

Blue Ribbon Analysis before the retirements of CC and Rogers.

                BLUE RIBBON ANALYSIS

                BACKCOURT: A-
                BENCH/DEPTH: A
                FRONTCOURT: A-
                INTANGIBLES: A

BYU appears to have all the ingredients for championship contention. Davies and a stronger, seasoned Carlino highlighted a productive offseason -- even by Rose's standard -- that showcased the players' collective sense of purpose.

Rose isn't known for hyperbole. When he touts talent and depth, the Cougars' potential for a league title looms larger than it did when they entered the league last season.

"Our chemistry has gotta be great and our worth ethic has gotta be great, and then we've got to have great leadership," Rose said. "And I think if that happens, this team could be as good as any team we've had."

If Haws picks up where he left off, the Cougars could claw their way to the top of what should be an even stouter WCC.

We're just going to be thin across the front line again.

The Collinsworth thing has been super frustrating. I'm pretty disappointed about Rogers as well.

I think both Sharp and Ambrosino are appearing more capable of contributing than I was expecting going into the year. Ambrosino appears to be at least as good as the last tall and skinny JC 4 BYU had in Rose's first 2 years and Sharp sounds much improved, perhaps Jimmy Boylen's much maligned eye for talent might be avenged!

Essentially, I think these two being able to play in enough situations with the right matchups can give the post more depth than we were anticipating with the loss of Collinsworth.

Personally, I think the improvements or lack thereof made by Carlino and Austin will dictate what BYU is this year.

If those two guys were healthy and playing I'd feel more confident about this team. But I think it will press guys like Harward, Austin and Sharp to really step up. I think the additional minutes they'll see will pay dividends next year and the year after. I am quietly confident about these three kids though and think they'll be better than expected this year.

I guess I don't expect much of Sharp, but I could be wrong.

You kind of hope Ambrosino is a poor man's Noah Hartsock, but it sounds like we'll have a real infusion of talent in upcoming years after this year.

I think Ambrosino is going to be more like Fernando Malaman. I don't think he will help BYU much but won't hurt enormously either. I think he will be a legitimate D1 player that BYU can put on the court 10-15 mpg. I think he will be able to shoot the 3 and if he can BYU's offense with Davies, Carlion, Haws and him ought to be able to put a lot of points on the board. I think AA will be more athletic than Hartsock but not nearly as good of a complete ballplayer.

I think Sharp will be a better defender than AA but not as good offensively and will likely see similar minutes. I think both will play a bit this year depending upon matchups, needs and foul situation of Austin and Davies.

The foul situation of Austin and Davies is what worries me the most. Both of them have been hackers in the past.

I think the trend towards zone play will continue for that reason.
