  • Haws back from mission

    Just watched this.

He says he lost 15 lbs. I bet he he lost 20 lbs of muscle and gained five lbs of fat. First thing he says is he misses the Philippines. I'm fine with missionaries as long as they lift and keep in shape. This BS about going on your mission and taking it seriously is bad for the program.

Like I tell my wife, best not to let certain shortcomings about me bother her. I feel the same way about missionary service and BYU sports. It is what it is. It has some advantages, likely more disadvantages. The advantages are understood by many and the disadvantages by very few.

I don't expect missionaries sent to 3rd world countries to typically be able to spend a lot of time in a weight room.

It would be nice if they were to exercise now and then. Maybe do some pushups and situps and run some. I don't necessarily expect them to come back in great shape. It is a nice surprise when they do.

Not to mention a diet heavy on lard. As has been pointed out numerous times on the board, you can't out train a bad diet.

Haws still loves basketball as much as just about anything in his life. It's still No. 1.
I'm excited for basketball to start!

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. His midrange jumper was desperately needed last year. I too am excited for basketball.

I am more excited about basketball than football. I feel like a Ute in the 90's.

Dream on. I knew the 90s Utes, I was a fan of the 90s Utes, and BYU is not the 90s Utes.

Haws was paired with another missionary, and their mission was clear. But rejection was common and there were times they would literally knock on doors as a last resort. The day would begin at 8 a.m., and Haws would be out from noon until 9 p.m. in an attempt to set up appointments.
WTH? What kind of mission was this?

Agreed. The trendlines for the Utes at the end of the 90s, and for BYU over the past ten years, are very different.

Geez. I hope not. I would hate to have that death spiral looming on our horizon.

I think SeattleUte was simply emphasizing the fact that he was a fan of the Ute basketball program back in the 90s.
