Football independent, all other sports MWC?

    Shoganai's latest blog entry:

So, my question. If BYU were destined for long term football independence, would you rather play hoops in the MWC (UNLV, UNM, SDSU, Fresno, possibly USU) or the WCC (Gonzaga, St. Marys)?

No brainer for me. If we were stuck as an indy, i would choose MWC hoops all day, every day.

Isn't SDSU going to be Big West now?

It would mean both sides eating some crow. I don't think it will happen.

I think the premise is that SDSU would come back to the MWC along with BYU because heaven knows SDSU basketball doesn't really want to be in the Big West.

That's a lot of crow to eat on all sides, and the MWC would have to offer so many concessions to BYU that they outright refused to give not much more than a year ago. I don't see it happening.

I'm sure BYU has and is considering it, but I can guarantee it isn't Option A, B, C, or D.

I think he's obsessing and internalizing this stuff way too much, even for a BYU fan. Would the MWC be a nice permanent landing spot for an independent BYU, sure, but it makes little sense to keep throwing ideas at the wall in hopes that something sticks.

BYU declares independence. A couple of years later, all BYU sports except volleyball and football are back in the MWC. Mens volleyball continues to play in the MSPF. BYU, as a football independent, is playing frequent games against teams like Hawaii, Utah State, Boise, hopefully adding games against Air Force and SDSU, mixing in some cool roadies to big name schools here and there, and ending the season in lower tier bowl games.

            Brilliant plan

BYU proposed this (Football independence and all other sports in the MWC) but the MWC wouldnt allow this.

Hawaii did the exact opposite. Football in the MWC and Big West in all other sports, and they were allowed in.
