  • Wiscounsin Coach Bo Ryan restricts kids Transfer

Man. This guy looks like an ass.. What is even more laughable is how many tranfers the football team takes in yearly (Their last 2 QB's were transfer..)..

Yeah, Tony and Mike on PTI were killing him over this. I bet he shortens the list under pressure.
"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

This whole discussion of "Student-Athletes" mantra is a joke. He is treating this kid like he has a contract (via Scholarship)..

Any student can transfer to any school they want.. But "Student-Athletes" are treated differently...

This seems very vindictive on his part.. It sounds liek he restricted a school after the fact". As in the kid showed interest and all of a sudden Bo Ryan added the school to the exclusion list...

Especially since, technically, scholarships are yearly.

AND.. Can be taken away based off of performance...

Looks like ESPN is going to dig on this for a while.. I don't mind..

Another player from Florida International was brought up today. Only, this time the kid was denied tranfering AT ALL! Forced to remain at school, kid decides to turn pro rather than return to FIU.. What a mockery..

When declining his appeal. Here is the response form the 3 board members who decided on his appeal..

An appeals panel consisting of three FIU board members refused to grant Ferguson his release, meaning the former highly touted recruit would have to pay his own way to play basketball at another Division I college. The panel members wrote they believed it would be more "beneficial" to Ferguson to stay at FIU even though he'd just explained he no longer felt comfortable after the firing of coach Isiah Thomas and he wanted to attend school closer to his family in Indianapolis.

If your family is wealthy enough to pay for school, or you have an academic schollie, why accept the football scholarship at all? Still declare for the program, but pay your own way.

Future recruits, take note and don't sign with this a-hole.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Tennessee did this with super hype running back Bryce Brown a couple years ago. He wanted to leave I think after Kiffin headed west. Dooley wouldn't let him out, so he had to pay his own way to go home to Kansas State. I think he can be on scholie next year.

These transfer rules do seem to lack fairness to the kids.

Coaches can quit whenever they want. Schools can fire coaches whenever they want. Schools/coaches can cut a player's scholarship whenever they want. Players have to get permission from the school to go elsewhere, and even then are subject to sitting out at least one season (if not two for in-conference transfers).

I wonder what would happen if the NCAA completely changed their transfer rules to state that a player is subject to follow the same policy for school transfers that the school follows for coaching changes.

That - or make a rule that if a coach changes schools mid-contract they have to sit out a year of coaching (two years if in conference?). Or better yet - they have to sit out whatever time they have left under contract with the school they are leaving.

I honestly don't care if coaches leave. I just think that players should be given the same consideration. I understand the concept of developing players and not wanting them to take off right when things are going good and the school is set to cash in. But I would suggest that Bowling Green and Utah could make an argument that they invested in the development of a certain coach - who promptly left just as it was getting good. What is the difference?

In particular - I think all players should be given the option to transfer penalty free if there is a change in coaches - either if the guy leaves or is fired.

I agree, but want to go further. Schools should be encouraged to fund scholarships for multiple years. If they want to take a flyer on a kid, then they can fund 1 year. If they want to keep a big time QB who plans on a mission, then they can offer for 4 nonconsecutive years. A good player can easily earn 4 years worth of tuition in 1 season. If a player is year-to-year, then he can transfer at the end of the year. If the player has multiple years on his scholarship left, then he can't transfer. If he thinks he might transfer in future, he can accept just a 2-year scholarship, or 1 year.
