Utes and Huskies

Today Ute fans will be treated to one of most athletically gifted and talented teams in the country--also, one of the most poorly coached. Washington's indidivual performances often dazzle, but weirder things have happened than a Ute upset here. The Huskies were crushed in Boulder; the line is Huskies -15; it was Cougars -11.5 before the last game.

It is crushing that CJ isn't at Utah. His presence alone last year is good enough to tip 3-4 close losses into wins and almost certainly keeps Jimmy as head coach.

As for today, Utah fans are so numb to the lengthy list of near-misses in recruiting to be bothered by it, and Utah fans are too nice to boo CJ out of the gym.

Yeah BYU never had a chance though he said BYU was top 5. It was Utah and UW. And really he was Utah's until he tripped to Washington. But it sounded like he just wanted out of Utah.

In HS Wilcox was not nearly so celebrated as Romar's usual recruits. I was surprised Romar even pursued him. Credit Romar for seeing Wilcox's promise.

CJ had nice offers but the reason he wasn't celebrated was because he didn't have high recruiting rankings, primarily because his dad didn't allow him to do the AAU circuit and instead had private workouts. I think he played just one year part time with Salt Lake Metro. Romar saw him at one of the few AAU tourneys he played in IIRC.

I've watched the Huskies a bit, and they're massively underachieving. They have three NBA-level talents on their roster (Gaddy, Wroten, Ross) and can't seem to win consistently. Their biggest problem is that all the talent (throw Wilcox in with the other three) is all stacked on the guardline and their bigs aren't worth shit. Three of the four mentioned above (everyone but Gaddy, who is very pass-first) will all get up double-digit shot attempts during a game, and everyone else will have maybe 3-5. They have no balance between their inside-outside play.

His lack of AAU cred is probably what allowed Utah to stay in the game for as long as it did.

The story I heard was that Boylen told him that the first thing he'd do with him at Utah was change CJ's shot...which also had something to do with him not coming to Utah. Good ole Jimmy Boylen.

You're using the term "heavily recruited" lightly here.

He's a big body with defensive presence, but is still pretty inept offensively for a RS jr. He's not enough to offset their imbalance because he's not even close to the type of big you can play through.

Just got back from watching the game in my lucky booth over a dozen glasses of iced tea. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I am feeling Hill at last made a good hire.
