  • Ranking college basketball programs.

My rankings look at the all-time history of college basketball with heavy weighting to post 1970 success and even heavier weighting for success in the last five years or so.

    1. North Carolina
    2. UCLA
    3. Kentucky
    4. Kansas
    5. Duke
    6. Indiana
    7. UConn
    8. Michigan State
    9. Florida
    10. Louisville
    11. Arizona
    12. Syracuse
    13. Georgetown
    14. Maryland
    15. North Carolina State

Admitedly, I had to really search for the last three, there's quite the dropoff between 12 and 13.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

That list sucks ass. I don't give a crap about graduation rates. I also don't care about anything that happened prior to 1960 or so. I don't see how anyone really puts Utah ahead of a program like Syracuse or ahead of a two-time NCAA champion like NC State (in the era where the NCAA really mattered). I also like the inclusion of two Ivy League schools on the list of the top 20, that's utterly preposterous.

I agree with most. I am having a hard time justifying Louisville that high on the list.

So, did football start in 1972?

Georgetown could be in the top 10 based off one thing alone:

@2:19. In the heydey of the 80s, there was no school more street and more real than Georgetown. RIP 2pac.

No, but basketball wasn't really desegregated in a huge portion of the country before 1960. If you take black players out of the mix, then you're left with a lot of teams that look like BYU's basketball team. There's a reason why a no-name team like Texas Western (UTEP now) could win the national championship in 1966- a significant portion of the major programs in the country weren't giving basketball scholarships to blacks.

Two national titles in 80s and recent final four appearances. Understandably, Arizona could be placed higher.

                  Fair enough.

I was just having a bit of rivalry fun.
