Martineau has to be gonzo after this year. No way he keeps a schollie.

Winder looks good for a freshman. Nice to have a guard playing PG. As this team develops and Rose gets a rotation figured out they will be competitive. The guards are very young and still an unknown, but Winder's play is encouraging. Abuou is a good defender, Rogers scoring and long arms on defense are a bonus, Hartsock and Davies will still be the key.
This team will change a lot prior to conference, but Rose is a good coach and knows how to put together solid teams.

I have every bit of confidence in Rose. Right now he's working lots of rotations and lineups but his rotation will become tighter as the season progresses. He'll nail down his lineup. We have some solid freshmen and more incoming. The future is very bright for Cougar basketball.Originally posted by TTCoug View PostWinder looks good for a freshman. Nice to have a guard playing PG. Right now I think this team is a tournament team that loses in the first round. I'm really impressed with Hartsock's development in the pivot. I like having Rogers off the bench as instant offense, especially when teams will focus on Davies and Hartsock early so he will be catching it inside out. Abouo isn't going to be consistent offensively but he seems to get most of his points out of hustle plays so he isn't costing too many possessions. As expected, Zylstra is giving us good minutes at the 2 while Harrison develops. Winder's not a pg yet but he can guard the 1 better than Cusick who lack sufficient athleticism. Rose will tighten the rotation up and we will find ourselves with the potential to win a tournament game if Carlino meshes well and is as good as I think he is.
When Carlino is eligible, I expect the following lineup and rotation: Carlino, Zylstra, Abouo, Hartsock, Davies with key reserves in Harrison and Rogers. If Harrison continues to improve offensively, we could see Rogers starting at the 2/3 with Abouo at the other wing. If Harrison's D continues to outstrip his O I think Rogers stays as the instant offense off the bench.

I agree that Winder isn't a PG yet. The yet is important, because he certainly can develop and would be a huge asset. With two freshman at PG it would be nice to have Carlino and Winder develop so that we have back-up for injuries or a sub for the inevitable off nights that freshman experience.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostRight now I think this team is a tournament team that loses in the first round. My favorite Abuou hustle play was running the court, beating the defender just outside the three by going behind the back on a fast break and dishing the no look to Winder on the run for an easy lay-up. It was a perfect example of Rose's emphasis on turning the ball around quickly on rebounds/turnovers and running.

SU has already said everything to be said on Sharp:Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostI really like Sharp defensively. He moves his feet and is surprisingly athletic. Based upon that footwork and length when they're in zone he absolutely dominates.
Who cares about Sharp. ESPN gives him a 40. lol slow soft return missionary sure to be a bust. I don't want meat heads like him.

I think this is accurate. This team will be solid this year but I see making the tournament as a good year. If they do make it I think they lose in the first round. If Harrison develops into a go to 15 ppg scorer by next year then I think they can win a game. The following two years I think they will be really, really good. My dream for this year is Harrison and Carlino's development and Chris Collinsworth to recover by the end of the year. My worry is Harrison struggles and gets discouraged, Collinsworth never recovers and shifts to a medical scholarship for next year and next season Martineau is still on scholie and Zylstra is still a starter. I think BYU needs to be looking like a madman for an athletic JC 4 to replace Collinsworth. I like Sharp but he strikes me as the quintessential role player who does all the dirty work and should come off the bench. If BYU can find a kid as good as Keena Young or even Fernando Malaman from JC ranks it would help next year immensely. I think it likely that both Martineau and/or Collinworth's scholie might open up for next year.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostDavies is supposed to be BYU's good player. They have nobody at this point. Because they are well coached, they will beat bad teams, but they just don't have good players right now. They are a team full of role players.
I do not believe BYU can win a tourney game with Brock Zylstra as a starter. I like Brock and he can be a decent sub, but if he is a starter I just don't think we will have the athleticism to beat a team in the dance. Now a team that starts Carlino, Haws and a developed Harrison can win a few games in the tourney.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

He we go again on the Zylstra bandwagon. Zylstra is not giving us good minutes anywhere. He is terrible defensively, he is awful in transition, he can't shoot. If he was serviceable defensively I could get past his inability to put the ball in the basket but he is not even good at that. He is shooting 34.5% from the floor. He is also averaging over 3 turnovers per game. The guy is nothing but a liability. I expect his minutes to diminish as the season goes on.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostRight now I think this team is a tournament team that loses in the first round. I'm not especially fond of Rogers coming off the bench right now, especially if we continue to wait 10 minutes in the first half to bring him in. But my guess is that Rose is prepping the team for when Carlino is eligible, and at that point Rogers coming off the bench makes much more sense. Right now Davies is struggling to get decent looks early in the game because he's on the court with Cusick, Zylstra, and Abouo. Ultimately, Rogers and Davies and Carlino need to be on the court together a lot.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostRight now I think this team is a tournament team that loses in the first round. Rogers' effort on defense took a big step forward last night. Having him and Sharp one the same side of the zone is fun to watch when Rogers is focused and playing hard. Sharp recovers so well, similar to Emery last year. Sharp's length mimics Emery's quickness, but each guy also just understands the right angles and timing in that zone defense.
Can't speak too much for the other coaches but Lacomb loves Sharp. He'll have a solid role in the rotation as the season goes forward unless Collinsworth is ever able to play 15-18 mpg consistently.

I know we are only 4 games in but Chuck is 7-11 from three. 63.6% obviously he won't keep that up but if he can hover around 40% I will be ecstatic. With the way he has been attacking the glass and how good of an on the ball defender he is, if he can develop any sort of offensive game he will be a huge contributor.
Stephen Rogers who is primarily a jump shooter is hitting 60% of his shots as well which is nothing short of amazing.
The achilles heel of this team right now is their free throw shooting which is a paltry 65%. I did expect it to drop as they want from a guard oriented team to a team that plays more inside out. More touches for your bigs who are historically not as good of free throw shooters.*Banned*

I sent DDD a text last night saying something similar about Pope. Clearly both Davies and Noah have developed better post moves over the offseason. If you remember last year Noah was not comfortable at all playing with his back to the basket. His only move was that face up jumper. Now he has an array of moves that have been very effective.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI like Lacomb. And Sharp. Thank you Utah!
