Noah had several moves with his back to the basket that were nice tonight. Up and under, drop step...pretty solid footwork. Maybe being coached by Pope instead of Nashif is paying off.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostDisagree on Noah. Put him against any size and he's virtually useless in the paint. Doesn't rebound well and has no back to the basket game. All he can do is spot up and hit open jumpers. Without Jimmer to create, those will be short supply.

I agree I thought Noah looked great tonight and in the first game. He seems to have developed more than that fadeaway when he gets in the post. He also rebounded very well.Originally posted by BGRTHNUMEGO View PostNoah had several moves with his back to the basket that were nice tonight. Up and under, drop step...pretty solid footwork. Chuck gets to the rim but can never seem to finish. It's been that way for three years. I was hoping this year would be different, but it doesn't look like it.
C'mon Chuck.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Chuck is the only guy that plays any defense.
We lose this game if Dixie doesn't miss about ten layups in the first half. Our offense wasn't our biggest problem last night. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

We also win this game easily if Chuck makes a third of his shots.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostChuck is the only guy that plays any defense.

Noah is a very underrated shot blocker. I think it's because he never leaves his feet so he never falls for pump fakes. He's actually 4th all time in blocks at BYU.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostAnd even had a block.

SMR if you think BYU is that overrated, stay away from their Blue Ribbon Preview. It's an ESPN Insider article but here are the grades:

Last yeare he came up big against seemingly more athletic competition. Must have had them shaking their heads, being blocked by a balding white guy.Originally posted by Surfah View PostNoah is a very underrated shot blocker. What does D2 Dixie St's frontcourt average in terms of height? About 6'5" like most other D2 schools? I'm sure being coached by somebody over 5'10", who had some skill, helps, but lets see what he does against a real team. I hope I'm wrong about Noah.Originally posted by BGRTHNUMEGO View PostNoah had several moves with his back to the basket that were nice tonight. Up and under, drop step...pretty solid footwork. What was he? 0-10? So add 6-7 points? I can immediately think of 12 points in easy layups that were missed by Dixie, and there were probably more.Originally posted by Surfah View PostWe also win this game easily if Chuck makes a third of his shots.
I'm not saying that it wouldn't be great to count on double digit scoring from him, but that's just not his game. He's a strong guy, decent rebounder, and our only peripheral defender. We need him for that. And we meet him not to be chucking up (ha) 10 shots when he's cold--it's not like he's a shooter who will shoot his way out of a slump. If this were a game that meant something, I sure hope that he wouldn't be jacking up some of those threes at the end.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I'd agree with this point if he were just shooting over them last night. He wasn't.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostWhat does D2 Dixie St's frontcourt average in terms of height? I agree. Noah and Davies looked very polished in the post. Junkie and I are were texting each other and I said that Brandon has added some moves to his game. BGR is right, Pope is paying dividends I believe. Now if he can coach up CC some on the offensive end I'll be ecstatic because he's our best interior defender and rebounder. CC has put on some weight. And the knee doesn't seem to be a hindrance. He's much further along than I expected he'd be. He's going to be great off the bench.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI'd agree with this point if he were just shooting over them last night. He wasn't."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

Davies is going to be very good. Bring Noah out to pop deep jumpers and keep his man off Brandon. Put a few more shooters on the perimeter: Rogers, Zylstra. If Carlino can penetrate at all, this team will be OK.

I was pleasantly surprised with Davies, although I am curious what he'll do against better post guys. Noah was the biggest nice surprise last night, and with his reach and ability to extend the D, I don't think we'll see a dropoff at all against better post defense--his game just doesn't depend on power, as much as Davies' does (not that Davies doesn't nice quickness and footwork--just that it might be mitigated a little against a decent strong big presence inside)
CC was a little disappointing. I don't expect much out of him but rebounding this year.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
