    George Sluga

Whatever happened to George Sluga? He was dumped by Bingham HS a decade or so ago and then I understood he was coaching some AAU team. Did he ever get back to HS coaching? Where is he now?
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

He's got to be pretty old now. I think he retired.

I am sure he is very old or deceased. But as I recall whne he was dumped by Boingham he was close to 500 career victories and I wondered if he ever got them. (I was his aide for one semester in HS, in case you wonder why I care).

Looks like he coached for less than a year at Salt Lake's West High during 2004, and was fired for undisclosed reasons - reportedly for verbally abusing some of the kids. (He claimed he was trying to immunize them to in-game taunting.) As of two years ago he was coaching a team for Utah pump-n-run, but he appears to have fallen off the map since then. His son is now coaching for Juan Something High School.

As far as his career victories go, his exact record is unknown but state statisticians include his name among the few coaches to reach 500 wins.

Thanks for sleuthing that out for me. I guess I shouldn't have been so lazy.

Yeah, BatGirl going all "look at me, I know so much about Utah prep coaching legends" on us.

I think I recall Sluga coaching when I was in HS. He must be very old.
            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Very typical kind of reference question. Nobody else seemed to have an answer, so I looked it up.

Looks like the obituary is for Coach Sluga's father.

It seems we had a post on Sluga a year or two ago. My high school coach hated Sluga's guts and that's all he talked about the week while we were prepping to play Bingham. The main thing I remember about the game was Ken Roberts drop stepping and dunking over me like I was an ant.

No basketball coach can do great things without at least one special player. This was as true for Rick Majerus as for John Wooden, and as for Dave Rose. The Roberts family was the gift that kept on giving to Sluga. Did all six of his championships have a Roberts element?

I dont think all six did but I think more than half did.

Sluga was a cantankerous guy, but I liked him.
