  • Conference affiliation in BB

    Not that important.

Look at the teams that have succeeded despite coming from bad conferences: Gonzaga, Memphis, Utah in the 90's, BYU, SDSU, UNLV in the 80's/90's, Loyola in the 90's, Louisville before the Big East, Cincinatti before the Big East, Xavier, Butler.

The 64 errr 68 team tournament pretty much equalizes the conference affiliation issue. Throw in a tough preseason, add an occasional late season non-conference game, and you're good to go. Being in a conference with at least one (and a half) superpowers in Gonzaga and St Mary's and it's even better.

I'm not thrilled about our conference situation, but it's more a fan issue--tough to get excited about late season games against such crappy teams. I don't think it holds us back one bit in terms of competitiveness.

Why are we even talking about small conference affiliation when in 3 years we will be in the Big Ten?

    Kidding but not really.

Another component: add "geographically varied" to tough preseason. I think for every stop BYU made in Buffalo, SP Island and parts east, we added more sportwriters who put BYU on their radar. They know who we are now, we just have to keep popping up. The team that won't go away. And the east coast establishment would love to have us--they can point to the one team out west they sort of know. Plus we keep feeding them with game tape via BYUTV. Mohammed to the mountain.

Ah yes, the George Costanza method.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I would prefer that BYU stay playing the MWC teams. I like the old rivalries and I think it would make for a more fun conference season. There is no doubt that I consider the move to the WCC a step down in conference play.

The issue is how will it impact BYU. I am not convinced it will make much of a difference at all. If ESPN does some good things for BYU in OOC play, BYU will be fine. BYU is a very unique school and I am not convinced that this move will slow down Rose's momentum at all. Rose is not a BYU guy. He clearly likes the tribal aspect of coaching at BYU and I do believe it was a compelling reason why he stayed, however he wants to establish his own legacy and he believes he can do this at BYU. Clearly he did not interpet this as the enormous impediment and slap that others believed it to be. Gonzaga has done well despite WCC membership and Oregon State hoops have been abysmal for 20+ years despite Pac-10 membership. I am not convinced that BYU moving into the Big-12 would be the huge boon others might suppose it to be when that day comes. BYU is unique and most likely less impacted by conference affiliation than the preponderance of other Div 1 programs. I certainly don't see this move as a boon for BYU, but I don't see it as a drag either. I also don't believe WCC membership is the long term solution.

Surely you meant Big 12? I'd love to see us in the Big 12. The P12 would take us sooner than the B10 would.

You need to add a modifier. I'd add "unless you enjoy watching basketball during the regular season."

But you might add "to NCAA tournament prospects."

Agree. As a season ticket holder, I'm totally pissed.

As far as the NCAAs goes, the only negative impact I see would be seeding. You can't predict RPIs and all that other junk, but looking at Gonzaga, they've been seeded 7th or worse 4 of the last 5 years. St Mary's deserved to be in this year but were snubbed.

Recruiting probably won't suffer and that's all that really matters.
