  • Jimmer, Kemba and the Naismith

This kind of reminds me of when Ty won the Heisman. The discussion was all about how it was between him and Raghib "Rocket" Ismail. But statistically there was no question that it was Ty's. Same thing here. Kemba is a great player ... but I bet Jimmer wins it running away, just like Ty did.

Did Detmer win it running away? I thought that at the time it was the closest Heisman vote. I'm too lazy to go look.

That's my recollection but I didn't look it up and that was a long time ago so I could be mistaken.

I wouldn't say Detmer ran away with the Heisman voting. Ron Dayne, Ricky Williams and Troy Smith ran away with the voting. Detmer's MOV was only about 300 votes -- not the closest race by any means since 1990, but more close than runaway.

I agree with you about Jimmer in that he crushes Kemba in POY voting. Not just Naismith, but AP and all the rest. There's no justification for putting Jimmer anything less than No. 2, but those that have Jimmer first will have a much wider range of candidates at No. 2, which will kill any chance Walker has of making this a close race.

Walker has been great as of late. But he had a very rough stretch in the middle of the season. So rough that he was not even the Big East POY. It would be interesting to see a guy not win his conference POY award yet still win the National POY.

Which begs the question -- were the votes required prior to the conference tournaments? If so, Jimmer has it in the bag. If not, maybe he loses some votes to Walker's performance in the Big East Tournament (and leading a team to five wins in five days is the most impressive thing anyone has done this season), but Jimmer's 52 against UNM should keep too many votes from sliding elsewhere.

Agreed, and I have to think that the BE falling apart in the tourney combined with the MWC doing well will give some voters pause about elevating the guy from the "better" conference.

Kemba has been awesome lately and I hate to see him be hated on by Jimmer fanatics, but there really shouldn't be any question that Jimmer has had the better year. The one thing Kemba's got is game-winning buzzer-beaters. Jimmer's only got halftime at Utah, and that game was never in doubt.

It's not Jimmer's fault that BYU tends to blow out their opponents (except that it is!).

I'm not sure when the votes for all the awards are due, but I'm pretty sure many of them are still in the future. Naismith just barely announced the 4 finalists, for instance. Jimmer really helped himself with the first two Tourney games, as that might the last impression for a lot of voters. I know that Pomeroy prides his rankings as being the only ones that take all games into account, so presumably votes for the big ones will start coming due this week or early next if they weren't already.

                  Okay, not a buzzer-beater, but a game winner with 10 s left.

Snaps I forgot about that one. If only he'd waited another 10-seconds. Still pretty good though.

That step-back buzzer-beater from Kemba a couple weeks ago is just beautiful, though. Jordanesque, really.

True, and I don't want to take anything away from Kemba, but Jimmer has been so consistent with his un-worldlyness throughout the season that he should def get the award.

Jimmer's shot at St. Mary's while not a buzzer beater was a game winner. When you beat most of the teams you play by double digits there is not much opportunities for end of game dramatics.

The Big East really is that good.
