  • The 2011-2012 BYU basketball thread (extra early edition)

Rodgers performance tonight left me wondering about next year.

Come this time next year I'm guessing this is what it looks like, please tell me (as I'm not one of CUF's go-to hoops posters) where I'm wrong.

    1 - Carlino
    2 - Abuo
    3 - Rodgers
    4 - Hartsock
    5 - Davies

    Bench rotation

    C. Collinsworth (4/5)
    Harrison (2/3)
    Winder (1-2)
    Anderson (5)
    Martineau (1)
    Zylstra

Or is it more likely that we see Collinsworth start and Rodgers comes off the bench as a 2/3 crossover?

Is it also possible that a la Haws and K. Collinsworth Harrison is a first year starter at 2 and Abuo spells 2 and 3 off the bench?

Is it true Harrison will be enrolling this spring? Also isn't the team going to Greece or somewhere this summer?

      I don't like Abouo at the 2, he's a 3 that can guard 2/3/4.

      I'd like to see:

      Carlino
      Winder
      Rogers
      Hartsock
      Davies

      Abouo
      Harrison
      C. Collinsworth
      JUCO 3/4
      Anderson

Martineau holding Down the end of the bench. Zylstra dropping basketball to focus on not being a spazz. Bring in one other guy.

      That's a 20 win team,IMO.

I see what you're saying w/ Abuo. I don't really know enough about Winder's game. Can he project as a starter at 2? What's his range?

As for McGuirk's feeling that we shouldn't be discussing this yet - feels right to me, Coach.

              I'm going with:
              Winder (Carlino in conf)
              Harrison
              Abouo
              Hartsock
              Davies

Seems that's the default lineup barring any surprises. I do expect Rogers to be a nice 6th man.

Being completely ignorant and having never seen either Carlino or Winder play, i seem to think that neither is a true PG or SG. Two combo guards I guess. Supposedly Carlino has been really good in practice, and Winder has started to impress after a rough start. Sounds like a RS year was just what the doctor ordered for Winder.

If Harrison can com in and play, that would be great. But I dont see Rose starting Carlino, Winder and Harrison. No way three new guys start at th ball handling positions.

I'm impressed that my mispelling of Rogers name was worth the time for you to go through and insert a 'd' in all the other names. Obviously a really important point to drive home with an elaborate spelling exercise.

LOL. The extra "d" was lost on me. What a shame to waste all that typing time on people who don't get it.

I wonder is BGR did the same with people who misspelled Ben Olsen/Olson's name.

It did take a really long time, but it was apparently worth it.

I'm assuming Ab-wow was just a typo, that is why I didn't remove a vowel from every other name.

That literally made me lol. I can see Brock now. Strapped to a chair with Doc Brown's mind reading hat on his head while a team of scientists studied the effects a bouncing basketball might have on him.

To your second point, I think that win total is spot on. Anything above 22 would be gravy even with an easier conference schedule.

I think Harrison has the handles to be the "pg" until Carlino is eligible. Also, adding in the foreign trip, he won't truly be a freshman. I think he is going to be our starting 2 and Abuou our starting 3 but it is so far away that speculation is tough.

Guys who could start at various positions in order of likelihood:

                              PG -- Carlino, Winder, Harrison
SG -- Harrison, Abuou, Carlino, Winder
                              SF -- Abuou, Rogers, Collinsworth
                              PF -- Hartsock, Collinsworth, Rogers
                              C -- Davies, Hartsock, Collinsworth

I believe Harrison was originally listed as a combo guard and has sufficient handles to bring the ball up the court and then convert to a wing. Recall that prior to Jimmer our "PG" was much more of our best ball handling wing than it is now. I also am in the minority on Abuou's handles. I think he handles the ball well enough to do the same thing. I think both are better ball handlers than Winder was when he came on campus. Can Winder develop enough to be a PG? He's trying to. We'll see. Carlino is the man after he gets back.

Harrison will start at the 2. He is a better athlete than Abuou and can really fill it up from deep. Add to that the extra time in prep school at with the team and he'll be able to defend without trouble. If he folds under the pressure, I think Abuou goes to the 2 to keep with Rose's "best 5" rule.

Abuou is our best bet at the 3. Until he stops rushing his deep range shots he is a better 3 than a 2. Hopefully he won't do international ball this offseason. That should help. Roger is most likely pushing for time here and will probably play it in the preseason unless Winder has dramatically improved his handles or Harrison can't take the pressure.

Hartsock will be the man at the 4 once again. He gets way too much criticism for how good he is. Game after game he has contributed in the way the team needs him to. Behind him we see Collinsworth. I really think Chris is going to be crucial as a glue player on this team because of his flexibility at playing many positions both defensively and offensively.

Davies is our best low post player offensively. His defense has improved but he has to be more willing to meet people early and defend them throughout the shot clock. His desire for blocks has been hurting the team both this year and last year and will hurt the team next year as well.
