  • Jonathan Tavernari.......

Before the Wyoming game Coach Rose had a talk with JT, I guess he pretty much lit him up and called him selfish, he told him he would not play another minute this season if he didnt start trusting his teammates and start playing within the offense. Tavernari at first was very pissed by this and thought Coach Rose was being unfair, he sulked his way through the Wyoming game passing up several wide open looks. He finished with 5 points in the game. Coach Rose sat down with him again after Wyoming and I guess they had it out and basically came to an agreement. Since that meeting BYU has played 4 games, and not coincidentally BYU is 4-0 and winning by an average of 20.0 points per game. JTs numbers have been outstanding.

    Air Force
FG 3pt pts reb. assists steals
    7-14 1-3 17 6 2 3

    CSU
    8-11 5-5 19 11 4 1

    TCU
    8-13 2-5 19 6 0 1

    UNM
    9-17 3-5 22 7 1 0

    He is averaging

19.75 pts 7.5 reb, 1.75 assists, 1.25 steals, while shooting 58% from the floor and 61% from three since Dave Rose talked with him.

Since the beginning of the year I've felt that JT is the key to the team.

Even though we kicked Wyomings ass it seems that when then the team is struggling it's when JT is moping and feeling sorry for himself, but when he's genuinely engaged and not "losing his head", BYU becomes really hard to beat.

Last night Jimmer and Lee both had really off games, and were it not for JT having a great 2nd half and Jackson emerging with his career high and keeping us afloat in the 1st half, we lose that game in the same fashion we did to UNLV.

JT has gotta keep his head or else BYU struggles. He's the barometer for this team.

What was the agreement? Did Rose ream him another one again?

Sadly, I think Rocky is correct, JT seems to be the key. I was nervous last night when he made those first two very tough shots and then forced a few more and missed. But he reeled himself back in and contributed very well. His shot selection improved as the game progressed.

Also I could be wrong, but I'm hearing JT is seriously looking to leave to play professionaly overseas after this season is over.

Not at all surprising. I think he's done about all he can do at this level. I'd be more surprised if he comes back.

This was true but now he is talking about staying because of his fiance'. He also promised his mom he would get his degree.

That is good, while it is obvious that Brother Hartsock is a future AA I am not convinced he will quite be there this time next year.

I'm not even convinced this time next year that Mr. Hartsock won't be sitting on the bench watching Mr. Davies taking his minutes.

Mister Davies is a future 5 at the BYU and he has redshirt written all over him. He is raw and physically a year younger than his graduating class. Davies redshirts next year to physically mature and then steps in as a starting 5 as a RS freshman. Then after a Freshman AA year, the draw of future riches will keep him in school instead of serving a mission as he annhilates Elder Foster from the U and while Elder Olsen attracts some dysentary like virus while eating contaminated chicken brains in the Quito, Ecuador Mission.

That is right SU, BYU hoop stars don't serve missions!

As for the 4, the future will probably be Kyle Collinsworth who will forego the NBA draft and sure riches to come and play at BYU so that he can be an example to his people, in the same way Danny Ainge was.

Davies has been playing very well of late. 22 points last night.

If JT is the key then BYU doesn't win a first round game yet again. Maybe next year.

Davies is supposed to be 235 lbs. At 6'9" or so, that is mature enough. I expect he will see time in our 4/5 rotation next year but that depends on his range and lateral movement.

I dont think he is necessarily the key, but I do think we need that 3rd player.

Lee, Jimmer, JT, Emery we need 2 of those 4 to have 18-20 point games and a third to chip in 12-14.

JT is playing great right now. Rose is a mastermind for getting production out of him without letting him tear the team apart. Rose may not be the greatest X's and O's guys out there, but he is nothing short of brilliant when it comes to the psychologist part of the job. In today's age of megaego (superego doesn't really work does it) athlete that's just as important.

I saw Davies play once this year. I don't watch a lot of high school games, so I'm not a great judge of how they'll transition to the next level. But I was very impressed.

I didn't see the rawness in his game. He was knocking down outside shots. His post moves looked pretty polished. He has a fairly solid body. I don't know if he's a legit 6'9, maybe more like 6'7ish. So that's the only concern I have about him playing the 5.
