  • Jimmer's Future in the NBA

Though everyone is so complimentary of my hoops analysis here, I'm not bulletproof.

I've been arguing with a friend the last few weeks about Jimmer's future at the next level. I hesitate to put any sort of limitations on him because I think what he has accomplished thus far is pretty incredible.

Will he turn into a three-point specialist/role player?

    Starting PG?

    Bench Warmer?

    D-League Legend?

    Solid backup?

My inkling is that in order for him to get substantial PT in the NBA, he'll have to demonstrate his defense. Not sure that he'll have the same number of chances to penetrate in the NBA, so his three point shot will be his bread and butter.

    Your thoughts?

I hate how most of this has been the talk concerning Jimmer for the last week. As if somehow the way he projects on the next level is impacting his status as NPOY. Just enjoy and recognize his greatness right now.

That said, it all depends on what team he ends up on.

There's no question, that will be huge. Steph Curry has been very good, but he was drafted by the perfect team for him. If Jimmer has similar good fortune, he could probably be just as effective.

I don't know what to think about this. I feel about it the same way I feel about BYU's tourney chances this year, I guess. I see them doing reasonably well, but won't be surprised if they don't.

          Yes.

I don't think anyone knows and won't know until he gets his chance and see what happens. It's so hard to predict how people will project at the next level. That's why lottery picks become duds and undrafted guys make it sometimes.

I could see Jimmer picking up his game and being a poor man's Derron Williams, starting as a point guard for someone.

And I could see him lacking the athleticism to play D and handle the ball like a point guard needs to, and being told he's too short to play the 2.

Jimmer is Gerry McNamara. I see a deep run in the tourney, drafted in the NBA, a few seasons as a reserve, one or two more in the D league and then a stint overseas. He will then join Rose on the bench.

Eek...I love and hate the comparison. McNamara was a little more athletic, but Jimmer's got that freakish ability to make nearly any shot (not that McNamara was a slouch).

In my heart of hearts, I sort of wish Jimmer gets D-leagued right off the bat, then uses it as motivation to come back with a vengeance and has a Steve Nash-in-Dallas career. Will probably never be the passer Nash is, but that would be my best-case scenario.

Terrible comparison, if for no other reason that the Scranton Gangsta was nowhere near the college player Fredette has been.

McNamara was at about 15-16 ppg and shot 37% FGs at Syracuse. Of course a guy like that won't make it in the NBA.

Bottom line, Jimmer is a really good college player. McNamara wasn't.

There's always some reason this guy is not the last guy, but more often than not this guy becomes the last guy.

Maybe Jimmer will skip the NBA to become Boylen's replacement.

The way the NBA is set up, very few people can guard effectively. As a result, I don't think D is a big deal in the League. I do think being able to score the ball is a big deal. Jimmer is an elite scorer from anywhere on the floor. He will find a spot in the NBA and play 8-10 years.

The comparison is closer than you might think. Average athletic, undersized, white boy shooter from northern NY that can light it up in a moments notice ( I am sure you remember 43 points in the first round of the tourney). G-Mac had a much better supporting cast that he was in charge of distributing the ball to, against stiffer competition. Put G-Mac in the MWC as a lead man and I think the comparison is closer than you would like to admit. Besides, we are talking about his future in the NBA.

That being said Jimmer is still Jimmer and I am loving the ride (as a non-bYu fan).

Wow.. it's amazing what one game can do to one's perception of a player. I was totally under the impression that Macnamara was a lights out shooter. Looked up his stats and was thoroughly underwhelmed. 37% career FG? 35% career from 3? That's not that good at all.

So yeah, comparing Jimmer to Gerry isnt even close.
