  • Chris Collinsworth out for the season

I didn't see this in another thread, so sorry if it's been posted already.

With Davies playing hack-a-whatever moves, our frontcourt depth really sucks. Hopefully Magnusson/Rogers will step up as conference play continues.

I really hope he gets his medical redshirt.

Me too. Supposedly this is why they shut it down when they did.

Can they just shut it down if it's not a true "incapacitating" injury? That is one of the requirements of a med red

I don't know. BYU never gets med redshirts especially for return missionaries so I would not count on it.

How much scrutiny is placed on hoops med redshirts vs football med redshirts?

I noticed this past week that Casey Kasem at Houston was given a sixth year of eligibility and will be back at QB next season. He had played in a few games, I believe.

Yeah, but he sent the NCAA a long distance dedication, to get his 6th year.

That part of the med redshirt requirement is not that big of a deal. A clever team doctor could probably get a severe hang nail to qualify as a season ending injury.

Pioneer stock combined with a severe case of honesty leaves BYU without Medical Redshirts

If he could have come back healthy by the end of February, I think it's a bad decision. If not, then there's nothing you can do. I'm hoping we play 8 games in March. Last two regular season, three in MWC tourney, and three in NCAA. Having CC play in those eight games would be more valuable than an additional full season of eligibility, IMHO.

The problem we usually have is related to total time in the program, not necessarily the quality of the injuries.

Yep. Because most RMs already use their redshirt prior to the injury, there's not much that can be done.

Chris just had knee surgery. I think we are looking at one of those situations where an RM really tries to lay it on the line and get back in shape for the season but the body isn't able to stay together during that sort of thing. The result is a string of injuries. I think Chris rushed a bit to get back for the UCLA game and his ankle injury became a knee injury. Anyway, I don't know if he'll get an extra year (probably given how little he played and the fact that he is only 4 years out of HS) but I do think we will need him more next year than this year.

Depends on what you mean by needing him more. I agree that he will be a more important part of the team next year, but this year he maight be the difference between winning two or three games in the tournament. I don't think he will do that next year. On the plus side, though, we could have him in 2013/14, with Haws, his brother, and Harrison, so he could be very important that year.

That is what I am thinking. This gives him two solid years with that backcourt trifecta. I think time will tell but this years pain could be a huuuuge boon in a few years.
