Is Jimmer the best ever at BYU?

The Jimmer has his own page on the post star website. It even scrolls all Jimmer related tweets in real time. I'm pretty sure this makes him the greatest of all time.

For what my opinion is worth, Ainge is the best player ever at byu. I loved watching Vranes, Judkins, Mannion, etc at Utah games, but cheered loudly for Ainge during the NCAA Championship runs.

FWIW, Ainge is far bigger than he looked on the court. He was a solid 6'4", and I was able to look him directly in the eyes when I met him (I am 6'6"). Most people I look right square in the bald spot.

Between Ainge and Fredette, I'd give a slight edge to Ainge, but as Red Auerbach said (rough paraphrase) when asked to choose between Larry Bird and Bill Russell, "I'd weep bitterly if I had to make that choice."

As great a shooter as Fredette is, Ainge's 3 pt. percentage in the NBA (even with the larger arc and better defenders) is probably better than Fredette's career percentage at BYU, although I'm too lazy to look it up. Ainge was probably a better defender as well. But Jimmer can create shots better than anyone I've seen at BYU and, for what's worth, I like his on-court demeanor and leadership better.

Total starts isn't the best way to measure greatness. Points scored is a decent metric but not the end all be all. Doing more with less can't be emphasized enough. Right now he has not done more so he probably isn't the greatest yet. Praising Jimmer is not dissing Ainge. I know Ainge was truly great, but I think people need to shake off the nostalgia and see what Jimmer is doing. Is he there yet? Probably not, but he is close and if he makes it to the final weekend of the tournament and garners POY honors then I think he is on top. Just my opinion. This in no way takes away from Ainge and yes I am old enough to remember him.

I see what Jimmer is doing, and believe me, I appreciate it. He is far and away the best player since Ainge. IMO, it's Ainge then Jimmer, then nobody. The fact that we can even debate who's better says a lot about Jimmer and what he's doing.

Jimmer needs to take this team farther than Ainge took his team if Jimmer is to surpass Ainge. Recall that Ainge was the best player on the team for four years running. Jimmer was not. Therefore, Jimmer needs to do more with what he has.

Has anyone compared ppg averages and controlled for pace? The game Ainge played was pretty fast paced despite the lack of a 3 point line. I wonder what percentage of BYU's offense Ainge was.

Bigelow (very good guy, btw, and top 10 among all time scorers) just moved into our ward. When I intro'd him to our gospel doctrine class last week, I noted that with him, our ward b-ball team had a shot at a .500 season. He shook his head and said, "I don't think I can take that kind of pressure."

Which reminds me of a great Dick Butkus quote. During a Chicago game after a Butkus tackle, a brawl broke out.

In the press a player accused Butkus of biting his finger under the pile. When Butkus was asked about the accusation, Butkus responded thusly, if the guy still has his finger, I didn't bite him.

If not, what does he need to do the rest of his career to hit that mark? Win National POY? Take BYU to th Elite 8? Final Four? And if Jimmer isn't, then who is? Ainge? Kosic? Bradley? Fred Roberts? Araujo?

Ainge's teams attempted roughly 5 more FGA per game.

IIRC Ainge's freshman year was a very bad team. The next year is when they got the 3 freshman to help him - Fred Roberts, Steve Trumbo and Devin Durrant and they were off to the races.

Some punk kid in the MTC tried to start a fight with me when I remarked to my companion that Paul James was a homer.
