  • Anson Winder - PG?

I've heard various internet posters speculate about Winder playing PG for BYU. But I don't think I've read anything as of yet that is actually based on workout reports. As far as I could tell, I don't think Winder played much PG at all during his last two seasons at Bishop Gorman. And I don't recall hearing Rose mention it as a possibility.

But if K. Collinsworth is headed on a mission, I guess we better hope Winder can play some point. Because even if Rose snags a PG this class, the only points on the roster for 2011/12 would be Martineau and that true freshman PG (Corbin?).

I had figured Winder was definitely headed for a RS this season, and especially thought that should be the plan if he needs to work on becoming a solid combo guard. But if he's going to have to play significant minutes at PG in 2011/12, I would prefer to see him get spot duty this year so he's not seeing his first college action next season.

This has nothing to do with Anson Winder, but I saw an interview with Dana White and he was wearing a Bishop Gorman t-shirt. I thought that was cool. And I like the relationship BYU has established there.

My impression of him is he's a Charles Abouo type maybe a couple inches shorter. I don't picture him manning the point.

If we can come up with a decent point guard, the post Jimmer/Jax future will continue to be bright. If not, it could be bumpy. I don't see one on the horizon.

Rose is already scouting the JC ranks heavily. I suspect with the loss of Kingma, we will go the JC route next year.

If Martineau is ever our starting pg, be ready for a season similar to football. Rose has to go the JC route for a pg. BYU is solid at the other positions for the next few years. The stiffs that have at the center spot should at least be serviceable.

I just watched a highlight video for Winder. He can run the point. He is good with both hands and he is an explosive finisher at the rim when out on the break.

I'm excited that we're getting some real athletes on this team. If Davies can develop like I think he can, this team will be able to run with anybody.

I don't know anything about Martineau, but BYU has been successful recently with less-than-stellar PG play. See Nashiff, Ainge, etc. But that's not a recipe for building on post-season success. I was really concerned before the Harrison signing because we are looking thin at both guard positions.

Will he play this year? Seems like a redshirt might in order what with our talent at guard. Also seems like he could benefit from a year in the weightroom, as his website lists his bench at 185.

I don't really think bench press is that important for a guard, but even if it were, 185 isn't that bad. Especially if he has long arms.

Harrison won't be here until after Fredette leaves. My guess is we're also looking for a JC point guard unless Winder does well there this year. That's me just guessing that Winder moves to the pg position as well.

Especially for a freshman. My guess is he puts on another 5-10 pounds before his freshman year.

Really? I could bench 190 as a non-athlete senior in high school, taking a weight lifting class with the other non-athletes. Maybe lifting isn't a big part of a high school basketball player's training, or maybe I was way cooler in high school than I give myself credit for.

My bad, I thought that was his weight. Well... at least he can bench more than Kevin Durrant.
