No doubt. I was excited when he flipped a couple of years ago and I'm still excited to have him. Even more so thinking about the fact that there have been teams in the past when he would have our primary big, and now he will likely just be a serviceable back-up to Mika.

He did have an offer from Kansas. They made his top 5 and then mutually backed away from each other when he said the mission wasn't something he was willing to let go of and KU decided that wouldn't work for them.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View PostPfft. No offer from Kansas? He does suck.

When it comes to not living up to expectations I tend to think that bigs fail to live up to recruiting hype more frequently than perimeter players. Given the physical maturity differences in taller 16 year old kids to those that are shorter, relatively speaking as this is basketball recruits we are discussing, I think college coaches have a better idea of a perimeter players' ability than bigs. David Burgess was a good example to me of this. It happens with perimeter players as well but it just seems to happen more frequently with bigs and I tend to attribute the cause to being that the physical maturity issues make projecting bigs a far less exact science than projecting perimeter players.Originally posted by HBCoug View Post
I don't have low self esteem! BYU has, what, five guys in recent years who were in the ESPN top 100 at some point: Mika, Haws, Emery, Dastrup, and Childs? I think Dastrup is by far the most likely to not live up to expectations based on nothing more than watching the kid's highlights. He's lumbering and not nearly as athletic as guys he'll be going up against at the PF spot outside of WCC play -- and I don't need a linked clip of him in a dunk contest at 6'9" dunking with no one guarding him as proof to the contrary. I think the short-term future of BYU hoops is very bright, but I don't think Dastrup will be a big reason why. Happy to be wrong about the kid.
I also think that Dastrup is coming in at a time that might tend to him not having the same opportunities to shine - especially for a recruit of his hype at BYU. That could be a factor as well. With his weight gain/bigger frame he might not be able to be that stretch 4 he imagined himself being and might have to play more 5 than 4. With Mika, Kaufusi, Davis and Childs he is likely going to be BYU's 5th this year in any case. Given his physical situation he might not be ready to contribute much until February anyway so I figure about the time he might be ready is the time Corbin will be ready. I just don't see Dastrup getting much meaningful playing time this season. Come next year when Kyle has graduated and I expect Dastrup's playing shape improves and he figures out what he is going to be with his bigger body, and Mika gets into better playing condition, I think Kaufusi becomes less valuable. For these reasons my preference for him is to redshirt this year to create space between he and Mika - especially if Yoeli Childs is all that and a bag of chips. Then Dastrup could come off the bench as the primary big at both the 4 and 5 as a frosh and soph and move into being a starter/go to player as a junior. It also takes away him having the opportunity to use that redshirt year as a transfer which I think he is the most likely to do of all the heralded kids at BYU right now.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Obviously, but one cannot foresee injuries or big man development. I remember Jesse Pinegar supposedly being the next Magic Johnson.Originally posted by BlueK View Postinjuries. maybe they all still would have been busts, but none could stay healthy."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

No one with any credibility said that about him. I guess I don't know every random crazy fan who may have said something like that. I'll grant you that none of those three mentioned lived up to expectations. My point was just that they all had well beyond their share of injuries which would have made it near impossible to be as good as they were expected to be. One thing is certain. None of them were ever as good as Eric Mika as a freshman. It"s not unreasonable to expect him to be pretty good once he gets back into shape. You could even argue Pinegar, Meads and Dawes never even got as good as Corbin Kaufusi. We'll see how Dastrup does.Originally posted by Topper View PostObviously, but one cannot foresee injuries or big man development. They showed flashed, but I believe the combination of injuries and other factors rendered them ineffective. I remember some recruiting gurus gushing about Pinegar as a high school junior.Originally posted by BlueK View PostNo one with any credibility said that about him. I also seem to remember some talking about him as a headcase once he got to BYU. It was a long time ago and I could be wrong about that. He did eventually transfer to Pepperdine and didn't really pan out there either.Originally posted by Topper View PostThey showed flashed, but I believe the combination of injuries and other factors rendered them ineffective. Apparently former LP backcourt mate of Frank Jackson, Christian Popoola - who we've discussed earlier in this thread a bit and has been playing at Bishop Gorman, has BYU as his top choice.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View Post
Also, Popoola is legit. Just a sophomore, so it's hard to judge how good he might be, but he's really good.

Appears to have grown a couple inches since his sophomore season at LP and this highlight video is impressive. If BYU could somehow land Popoola it would certainly take some of the sting out of losing FJ.

Sounds like a big part of him ranking BYU so high is playing for Coach Lewis from LP. Plus he knows half the team already.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostApparently former LP backcourt mate of Frank Jackson, Christian Popoola - who we've discussed earlier in this thread a bit and has been playing at Bishop Gorman, has BYU as his top choice.

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

it will be interesting to see how much interest he generates among higher profile schools through next season and if BYU can hang on. i'm sure being in the Big 12 wouldn't hurt BYU's chances.Originally posted by falafel View PostSounds like a big part of him ranking BYU so high is playing for Coach Lewis from LP.
