Though I think he’s a lot of fun, I became a lot less bullish on Bosko’s future when smr reminded me he is 22, and will turn 23 before the season starts. I had in my head he was an 18/19 yo freshman and could see a big jump next season, but at this point I expect him to be pretty much the same player as he was this year.

My understanding is he was awarded, or BYU is pursuing, a medical redshirt so as long as he didn't play more than whatever the threshold for Medical Redshirt is he ought to be good to go. Very similar to the situation with Tanner Toolsen his first year at BYU where he played a few games early and then got hurt and BYU used the injury to get him a Medical Redshirt and preserved him a year of eligibility.

BYU may not need to be the highest NIL offer, but they will certainly need to be competitive if they want to land Tanner. Playing time will also be a factor for Tanner. He likely would not start at BYU next season, but BYU can pitch him the offer to be a rotation piece for his dream school on a final four caliber team, and then have to the chance to start the season after. Tanner has two seasons of eligibility remaining and will be a redshirt junior this coming season. I don’t see Tanner coming to BYU just because he’s a “BYU guy.” If BYU undercuts Tanner in their NIL offer or if he likes the roster situation better at other schools, he would likely go elsewhere.

The 6-foot-3 guard was named America East Rookie of the Year this past season after a productive freshman season. Somerville averaged 13.6 points, 3.7 assists, and 1.5 steals on 40.5% shooting from thee. Somerville shot 75-185 from three and averaged nearly 6 attempts per game.

Richie Saunders, Dawson Baker, and Brody Kozlowski have not announced their intentions. Sources have told me that Baker and Kozlowski are both set to return. I still expect Richie Saunders to return to BYU, even if he elects to test the NBA Draft waters and conduct team workouts.

Those we can reasonably believe will be on next season's roster are:

I think BYU is still recruiting a few players. Martin Sommerville is in for a visit. AFAIK, he is is the only transfer portal visit BYU has set up, but I am not in the know and these things move quickly. He would be a nice addition. BYU is linked to other potential transfers but in this day and age of AI generated trash I recommend the approach of not believing there is a genuine interest until recruiting visits get set up. I also expect BYU to add another international player or players during the summer.

With Sommerville, BYU has a fairly complete lineup, IMO. In a perfect world another younger dynamic wing who could step into a prominent role the following year would be a nice pickup, the Texas Tech P, Derrion Williams, would also be splendid as would another 5 who is ready to play 15-20 mpg, if needed, in Big 12 play. But if BYU has to play Boscovich and Staton at the 5 when Keita isn't on the court-I think they will be ok. Sommerville is reputed to be a combo guard so he could play at the 2 together with Wright-so I think BYU would be fine at the 1 and 2 with those two, Saunders and Baker. There are a lot of forward prospects but clearly a dearth of experience but oh well-you learn as you play.

But obviously, there is a long time left until the roster will be finalized and 5 potential scholarships available so things are likely to change.

Saw a Robbie McCombs article that said the article about BYU being in lead for TT’s Williams was indeed AI generated and that the attributed author doesn’t actually exist. However BYU has apparently reached out. Robbie guessed that returning to TT is most likely result there though.

As an aside, I'd love to see the contract Wright, Dybantsa, and others sign as part of their commitment and NIL deal. I assume it includes a forfeiture clause tied to Honor Code compliance which with the bag sizes we're talking about makes compliance far more likely, I'd expect, than for students generally.

I don't think we're that far apart. I fully agree with your first statement above. I do think BYU can offer a unique experience on 4 and 5, and as I noted, emphasizing 4 and 5 will narrow the field and bring players who have a good understanding of what to expect at BYU.

SB, I think your present biases might be causing you to read things into Hansen's statement that aren't being said. I see how you can interpret it that way--and i'm not saying that's not a reasonable way to interpret his statement within a certain framework. But I also think that framework is making it so you can't see it another way, which I believe is actually the way he's intending.

I don't think he's saying "it's either BYU or empty nothingness" for everyone, what he's saying is that for certain players, BYU offers the bag in addition to something greater for those players who really want that. That something isn't for everyone. But for the right people it's extra great. AND you can get paid, too. We're not looking just for the guys who want to get paid. They can get paid anywhere. We're looking for the guys who want to get paid and who also want what BYU has to offer along with it. I don't think it's obtuse or moral superiority to say that BYU offers something that other schools don't. I think it's factual. That doesn't mean you can't have a transformational experience elsewhere. But you're not going to have the same transformation experience that BYU offers at Utah State. Or Utah (despite what Kwhittingham says). Or Notre Dame. Or SMU. You're just not. You can have a great, transformational experience in other ways. And those ways might be equally great for certain players. But they won't be the same. BYU is leaning into its uniqueness, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

This is fair. I can certainly agree he may have intended your more nuanced meaning, but he almost literally states an either/or to end his thoughts. I'll just restate that I prefer what I feel is a more honest description of what's happening with BYU sports and an acceptance of it being a good enough reason on its own to move forward. If the 11 months that many of the elite players will be spending on campus is also said to be transformational then I will more often than not be taking your collective word for it.
