Utes sign one more JC guard...

Chris Kupets, brother of Georgia/Olympic gymnast Courtney Kupets. Smallish but can play the 1 or 2.

Not a very good funny, but it had a good ring to it, and I thought it was a well balanced joke.

It seems like Boylen is stockpiling guards-which makes sense with the Brown and Henderson departure. Is this guy expected to play or is he just roster filler?

I expect that Boylen wants to bring Preston Guiot, our kid from Misssouri with a very bright future, along slowly and not have to throw him to the wolves. I suspect Guiot redshirts now, Watkins, Hines and this kid will deal with the point.

Both this kid and Hines can play some 2 as well.

Like I said we won't win the league but I am optimistic we'll be much better.

In fact with all things considered if we aren't significantly improved, I'll say I might be wrong about Jimmy B.

I think Boylen has some concerns about his job and is pushing "all in" for 2010-11. My only concern with the additional pickup is the scholarship crunch that will be for the class of 2011.

Its not nearly as bad as you think

The team for 2012-13 will have these guys on scholarship

              Preston Guiot
              JJ O Brien
              Dominque Lee
              Shawn Glover
              Chris Hines
              Jared Washburn

Plus Josh Sharp comes off his mission next year and Jeremy Olsen will return for the 2012-13 season, so that is 8 guys we'll have on scholarship.

We'll have 5 new guys so we'll need to count on some newcomers but that is a nice core group to work with. For the first time in a decade Ute Hoops will have some consistency, which means we've come A LONG WAY.

What are you saying? Since Giacoletti's 2nd year, Utah's been pretty consistent, and not the good kind.

I like how Crimson and USS have already penciled in 25 wins. Boylen has rebounded nicely from an internal situation that looked like total melt down. Still, we don't know how good any of these kids really are. JUCOS are risky, to be sure; I have a better feel for it in basketball and I can tell you that a majority of them don't make much impact.

Not one of these kids is a sure thing, nor does Boylen have the luxury to take five years to develop them. There won't be five yars to bring them along slowly, let them grow up and marinate, redshirting, etc. A couple of them, DiMaria and Kupets, have me scratching my head. DiMaria was a Wyoming reject, and until now Boise was Kupets' best offer. But hey, BYU has built somewhat of a program on these kinds of kids almost exclusively. THe best thing I can say is that if you need JUCOS to save the season from debacle, it's good to load up on them and increase the odds of any of them working out. (Kupets does seem a good kid who might be a good offensive weapon for 8-10 mins. a game and content with that).

The JUCOS need to step in right away, start making shots and plays and stops and winning games. What Boylen has given us is reason to hope. He might have a nice team next year. But then again, he might have another bad team.

We are a long ways from 25 wins. Talking about Utah's "return to consistency" (lol) and comparing any of these guys to Brandon Jesse is way premature. The Boylen propaganda machine has been working hard the past month.

Sounds like Boylen is saving things. Good to hear. I like him. And I like it when you Utes are competitive. With all of the attrition I expected you guys to have a rough, rough year. Now it looks like you guys are poised to make a run at 5th place in the MWC. Congrats.

We've had 3 losing seasons and 2 season with post season play including one title. That isn't consistency. Although Utah fans like to pretend we didn't win that title.

This is college basketball, if Guiot is as good as everyone thinks he should come in start and make an impact right away. If he redshirts chances are he is not very good.
