My relationship with the three teams in the Triangle is interesting. First and foremost I'm a Cougar fan, but when I moved to NC I decided I would pick a second team simply so I had a local team to root for. Since my company's headquarters is on a shared technology campus of NC State that includes both companies like ours and the Engineering and Textile schools, I decided to try and root first for NC State. I went to a football game and a basketball game that first year, and by the end of the year I had decided that I didn't like NC State. So I switched to UNC, and I've been a lot happier since then. I've been to UNC football and basketball games and I definitely will stick with UNC as my official second team, not to mention that now that I'm marrying a UNC alum I'll have no other choice.Originally posted by cowboy View PostThat's pretty much the only two groups of people rooting for Duke right now.
So since I'm a UNC fan, I really don't like Duke. However, I've always liked Coach K. I think he's a brilliant coach and a good man. Plus I went to a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium once and it was a great experience. But overall, I don't like Duke and I want them to lose, so of course I'm rooting for Butler today.
Nevertheless, wishes are different than reality, and I think brackets should be more about reality than wishes, so I did pick Duke to win the whole thing when I filled out my bracket.Visca Catalunya Lliure

Lots of people claim to hate Duke. Not coincidentally, lots of people are huge liars.
America secretly loves Duke and its lineage of privilege

"When considering why Duke was conveniently placed on a fast track to (the Final Four by NCAA bracket makers), the power of the Blue Devils as a TV attraction must be factored into the equation," wrote the paper, adding that, simply put, "Duke has a history of juicing TV ratings."
This cannot be explained away as a mere product of Duke's alumni fan base or the watch-'em-because-we-hate-'em crowd. Those die-hard audiences, however passionate, are too small to account for such inflated national viewership figures.
We can hence conclude that a large segment of basketball fans who say they detest Duke — and who may consciously believe they detest Duke — actually secretly or subconsciously adore it and its privilege.
Which, again, makes sociopolitical sense. Populist as America's political pablum is, and much as our liberal and conservative protests perennially berate elites, we typically put one of those elites (Ivy League or otherwise) in the White House, almost always reelect our money-privileged incumbents, and even vote for those incumbents' progeny based exclusively on their dynastic surnames — just as we reward the Blue Devils (and Yankees and Cowboys) with higher TV ratings.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.
