Let's say we are starting a new university from scratch, or moving them up to D1 for the first time, and you have the power to have any coach from the NBA or college come and build your program for the next decade. Who is your guy?

I like Frank Martin. He's awfully intense, but it's my understanding that he's that way because he demands accountability of his players. Not just on the court but off the court as well."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

A couple of times when I initially assumed he was yelling at the refs, it looked like he was actually chewing out his own players for committing the fouls. I liked that -- making his players accountable. Although I'm not sure many parents would be very excited about sending their kids to play under a coach with that type of sideline demeanor and those facial expressions.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostI like Frank Martin. I think Tom Izzo is a great coach and a good guy and he would probably be my first choice.
After him, maybe Roy Williams.

Those are good choices as well. I tend to lean toward Martin because HFN mentioned choosing a coach for the next 10 years.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostA couple of times when I initially assumed he was yelling at the refs, it looked like he was actually chewing out his own players for committing the fouls. Martin is 43. Izzo is 55. Williams is 59.
I'll admit that I'm discriminating against older coaches in this case.
As far as parents are concerned, they need to realize that their kid is getting an education out of it and that college sports is not little league. If the players or parents can't handle a coach getting after the player or the kid, they can always pay for school themselves. Besides, Martin doesn't cross the line, or at least I've never heard of him crossing the line.Last edited by il Padrino Ute; 03-21-2010, 10:13 PM."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

Good point. I think you would ideally want a guy in his 40s.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostThose are good choices as well. I tend to lean toward Martin because HFN mentioned choosing a coach for the next 10 years.

If you don't care about Academics at all, then Calipari would have to be your guy, as long as you accept the probation when he leaves.

I bet Kansas is glad to have traded Roy Williams for Bill Self, since Williams never could win them an NC and Self has already.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostA couple of times when I initially assumed he was yelling at the refs, it looked like he was actually chewing out his own players for committing the fouls. And Williams has won two National Championships at UNC (2005 and 2009), so I would say Roy is probably OK with the move as well.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI bet Kansas is glad to have traded Roy Williams for Bill Self, since Williams never could win them an NC and Self has already.

Bill Self. He's taken three programs to the Elite 8, and as far as I can tell he runs a clean ship. He's also relatively young (although older than Frank Martin)."I don't know the origin of said bitch booming."-Art Vandelay

After yesterday I'd have to go with Izzo, he's just outstanding. If I couldn't have him, I'd definitely want one of his top assistants."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I'd see if Wooden would come out of retirement. As long as he's alive why not have the greatest coach of any sport ever? He's only going to be 100 this year.
Frank Martin would be nothing without hiring street agent, er, assistant basketball coach Dolante Hill. Making an AAU coach the highest paid assistant in college basketball if he brings his players out of PG County, MD to Manhattan is ridiculous. His schtick is pretty tiresome too. Besides he was Huggins' assistant. That right there should be enough to cause some noses to wrinkle. Sorry, but I am not a fan of his.
Other coaches I like would be Larry Brown for my college program. He's a proven winner in college and the NBA at multiple programs and teams. And I also really like Steve Lavin. He got a raw deal at UCLA. He was very successful there and didn't lose many of the top recruits in the area. What did he have like 5 sweet 16's? That's pretty damn impressive. And as everyone else has mentioned, Izzo has to be up there. He just seems to be classy and a good coach."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic
