  • Guess the line

I have never bet on sports (though I was ohhhhh so close to putting $100 on UNLV Friday night so I would be happy with either outcome but stupidly self-righteously walked past the sportsbook at the Hard Rock), other than the occasional milkshake or dinner with a friend. I love the combination of science and voodoo that is used in determining point spreads. I have 1 other friend that I will often text or call before looking at the lines to see who can come closest to predicting what the opening number will be. If I'm not too lazy or forgetful next year I might have this be a weekly thread.

I predict BYU -4.5 for the Thursday morning game

I think I saw that it's only 2.5 on a Gator board. Not sure if that is correct. But I'd bet the farm on that.

      BYU -2.5
      UNLV +1.5
      New Mexico -10.0
      SDSU +4.5
      USU +2.5

      Those are actual LVSC lines

Man, I would seriously throw down some coin on the BYU game at that line. That is easy money. Get in on it now boys.

Either Art has a gambling problem or is a genius. Vegas line opens at BYU -4, online you can get it as low as -3.5

Vegas lines aren't that complicated. Look at a few computer models and take the difference of the ratings, and you'll get pretty close. Sagarin would have BYU -5.5. They probably tighten it up a little with the NCAA tourney.

2.5 seems like easy money... but betting for your team is such bad karma i'm staying miles away from that one.

Ok that sounds complicated and kind of like cheating (at least for the purpose of why I guess). I just like seeing how close I can guess. I don't research look at online sites, and know nothing about computer modeling. I'm usually pretty close with BYU (the only team I really follow in any sport) basketball is a lot more variable than FB just because of the quantity of games and I often don't know much about their opponents.

The line has now moved to -5.0 . Meaning a lot of money is being put on BYU. Generally early money comes from wiseguys and professional gamblers, especially mid-week in Vegas. The team fans and amateurs won't have much effect on the line until Wednesday. Lets all hope they know what they are right.

I know almost nothing about KSU, but I'm guessing they will be favored on Saturday. My guess of the line is BYU +4.0

                      I would say KSU -6.5

I don't know why I enjoy guessing something as stupid as this...but I do. I was correct KSU is opened as a 4.0 favorite in Vegas (3.5-4.5 at different online sites). They early money seems to be favoring the Wildcats, pushing the line up .5

As I said before the UNLV game a week ago, I'll be missing from the board for the next while to go haul ass to Vegas. Even at 4.5 points, I would still definitely pick K-State. K-State looked like a Final Four team yesterday while BYU got bailed out by Michael Loyd. Fredette scored 37 but he "only" shot 50% (usually, 37 points in a college game connotes a really good shooting performance, in this case it just means that Fredette was the only guy that had any balls yesterday, besides Loyd).
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
