  • Eye test

I absolutely hate this term, and i'm hearing it more and more.

"I don't care about the RPI's or computer models or rankings or SOS. The eye test is what I go by, and this team XXXXX looks great."

    translation:

I watch a few college basketball games a week, but my opinion is worth way more than...

--computer models which incorporate thousands of points of data, 30 games per season, 330+ teams, win-loss, margin of victory, opponent's record, opponent's opponent's record, etc.
--human polls which are average opinions of 100 people equally informed as me

I think the "eye test" mantra is primarily in response to RPI rankings, which of course eschew margin of victory.
Everything in life is an approximation.

RPI really does screw things up. You could create a computer model average the same as they do for college football that would be significantly better than RPI. And people might start to trust that more and the eye test less if they see quirks like

      SDSU 33 RPI, 47 computer models http://www.masseyratings.com/cb/compare.htm

Michigan St 26 RPI, 19 computers
      Butler 16 RPI, 22 computers
      Georgetown 14 RPI, 20 computers
