  • Big differences between MWC men's and women's tourney formats

The women's #1 and #2 seeds get byes clear until the semifinals, which is huge if the conference's goal is to match #1 vs. #2 in the championship game:

While in the men's format, as most of us know, seeds 3 thru 7 get equal the byes that #1 and #2 get:

Anyone know the background on why they're different?

I just noticed this myself. 4 vs 9, 5 vs. 8. winners play, then the winner of that plays the 1 seed.

On the other side, 6 vs 7, winner plays 3, then the winner of that plays the 2 seed.

Seems like a very strange format.

A bunch of the ladies coaches complained about the lower seeds hurting the higher seeds rpi.

IIRC most of the coaches wanted the change. They might have even voted on it and the conference decided to go with it.

I guess they are 2 different philosophies. The men want to get as many in the tournament as possible. The ladies want the highest seeds possible.

Ladies programs are far more established than the mens. The MWC mens' programs are still seeking respect. The ladies' have multiple programs with NCAA success over the past decade. My guess is if the current trend continues with the mens' programs you will see the men adopt the women's format as more programs are no longer "just happy to be there."

            Money.

Nobody wants to watch the women's games, but the conference has to have a conference tournament winner to send to the women's NCAA tournament. Giving the 1 and 2 seeds a bye until the semis means there are fewer games and fewer women's games = less lost revenue.

Wow. You are exactly wrong. There are still 8 games to eliminate 8 teams on the way to determining the champion.

One thing that does happen is that the tournament is drawn out. In this format, 6 teams are playing the first day and you still don't get to an eventual champion until 4 days later.

If the womens #1 and #2 seeds get buys until the semis, there are 6 games. If the womens # and #2 play in the 2nd round, then there are 8 games.

Which is it? I don't care enough to look it up.

Ok, I was wrong about the number of games. There are 8. Thanks for that info, beefy.

It would pretty much have to be, as it is difficult for more than one team to be eliminated in a single game. :-)
