  • Dave Rose coach's show yesterday

I've made it a habit this year to download the post game shows and the Monday night Coach's shows. They've always been a highlight of my day, even after a loss. I love Coach Rose and his style and philosophy usually couldn't match better with what I want to hear from a coach. I didn't enjoy yesterday's version though.

    1. His explanation of Jimmer's sickness was very, very, very strange. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but there is definitely A LOT more to the story there that we'll probably never know.

    2. After UNLV game and at various times of the season, the interviewer tries to blow smoke up Coach Rose's ass and Dave is always quick to reject it, saying the team needs to get better, they're not satisfied, they're going to work hard in practice, whatever. This time, Coach Rose took the Bronco way of defending the program and pointing out why we're good and UNM just happened to be better and sometimes that's how it goes. I didn't hear the fire, I heard defeat.

I hate to say this, but I really wonder if Jimmer is not doing what he's being asked to do on the court and Rose picked a time to drive his point home. Jimmer has one of the 15 lowest fouls against rates in the entire country.

If that's true, I could think of some better times to drive that lesson home.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I think he was really sick. I read where it isn't even a sure thing he plays tomorrow.

Exactly, doesn't make sense at all. Conference championship on the line, seeding on the line, packed MC and Rose decides to send Jimmer a message. I don't think so.

It probably came from the coach's show I listened to. He said something like "Jimmer went to see the doc this afternoon. He was feeling well enough to shoot today but didn't practice much. Tomorrow hopefully he'll be able to practice and hopefully be able to play in the game."

I dont know if I will go as far as to say Rose was

teaching Jimmer a lesson but I think Indy is on to something.

Jimmer is a witch with the basketball in his hands and is hands down the best offensive player in the conference, but other parts of his game hurt BYU. He rarely finds a man to box off when the shot goes up. I think other coaches have noticed this and tell whoever he is guarding to crash the boards. Also defensively, he gets lazy. Rose pulled him right after he made a poor defensive play in transition. Initially before learning he was sick, I thought Rose was trying to prove a point with him.

I understand that some of the rebounding woes BYU has is because they have come off of their man to help on defense leaving players alone on the glass, but I swear they dont work that hard at boxing off drills. Its a rare exception that you see a BYU player seek out someone to box off when the shot goes up. We used to do those drills until someone was bleeding.

Anyway, with the wasy Jimmer was playing (taking poor shots, no defense) even if he wasnt sick he could have been justifiably pulled for a stretch. Not the whole second half obviously.

Yep. Rose leaped out of his chair to sub out Jimmer after the first possession of the second half where UNM gets a rebound and pushes up the sideline really fast and gets an easy bucket. It wasn't a leap like "bummer, we talked at halftime about whether or not Jimmer had the strength to play and I guess he doesn't." There was some real emotion to that. And the interview I heard from last night seemed to verify to me that there was more to the story. Very strange and a little troubling. I hope whatever it was, it blows over quickly.

Btw, Jimmer rebounded great against SDSU. There were a couple times he rotated down to help the helper to box and get the weak side rebound.

Coach Rose mentioned in the post game coaches show that the illness was really slowing him down on the defensive end, not as noticeably on the offensive end.

The whole thing stinks and raises a ton of questions. Why the emotion when he leaped out of his chair to sub him? Why didn't he experiment with playing Jimmer a couple minutes at a time? Why didn't he put him in when they switched to a zone? Why didn't he put him in for a couple minutes when Loyd picked up his 3rd foul with 14 to go or something like that? Why didn't he try going offense/defense with Jimmer at the end of the game?

Something's not right about it. I just hope the whole thing is resolved and buried.

I skipped over this part the first time through. What exactly is this?

Translation: he's not agressive enough on the defensive end?
